September Fry! Can't Post

Hi This is the first year I found fry in my pond (On August 1st). I'd like to see what they turn out to look like, so I set up a nursery in the big pond. Now that it's Sept and its cold out, I brought them inside in a 55 gallon tank. Problem is, I now have 6 differnet sizes of babies in my tank - picked out the last group on 9/27/04! They now range from about 1/4 " to about 1 1/4" long. Most are gray and some are starting to show a line of orange and red and black on them. I thought this was a Spring thing?!? I have 6 12"-14" koi, 3 fancy tailed goldfish (which when I got them they told me they were koi - who knew then?!) I never saw eggs - only sign was a coating on the top of the water every so often. I thought Koi only layed eggs once a year.......Do goldfish lay eggs more than once? I'm wondering if I have at least 6 females or does 1 keep laying the eggs? This wasn't planned, but I'm trying to do the best I can........I love this site! Thanks for any advice!

Hi Santrinka Goldfish spawn like mad all during the summer and koi normal spawn once but this might help you out some, try keeping you goldfish seperate in the spring so your koi will spawn and not get a koigoldfish cross which grow very fast and are not good fish to keep. This happened to me this spring and I will be removeing my goldfish to keep this from happening again. and if I had my way I would not have goldfish in the pond with my koi because of this , but my other half likes the goldfish so we keep them together because of this reason. They also will spawn in Septermber but unless you do like you are doing they are not big enough to survive the winter. After my spring spawn I will be putting the goldfish back into the pond with the rest of the koi. I just hope I can get the pairs matched up before a free for all happensLaugh Good luck with your fry and if you can take a few pics of the best offspring for us to see.

Thanks so much for the information! I tried to remove the goldfish, but I can't catch them! My pond is a little over 1000 gallons, but I made it have an island in the middle, so the fish can swim without having to turn around if they don't want to! LOL Guess I'll have to remove water until it reaches the deepest part and scoop from there! Thanks again :-)

I caught her/him! This is my biggest goldfish (picture attached) It was bigger than I thought - 14" from nose to the end of it's tail. Also attached is a picture of the last batch of fry - 40 of them caught on 9/26 - They are in a paper cup to show how tiny they were! Boy, do I have a lot to learn and this forum is just the right place! What fun! Thanks for all the great posts!

LOL Santrinka Cool Those are mosquito fish! They are basicly minnows! They don't get any bigger than 3 inches but can become a pest if you don't keep the population down. Here are pictures of my largest!

How funny! Where in the world did they come from?! Some of the bigger ones have orange, black and red markings on them now - hopefully those will be something........I have 6 different sets of fry. This is so interesting! I did find 4 babies in my pond in July - two are koi (they even have those barbles!) and one is brown with long flowing fins and one orange with a white bottom. I gave away the orange one, can't catch the dark one because he's hard to see. I have a fish bowl on my desk in school where I work and all the kids want a baby.......after I see what they are, I have enough for everyone! LOL Thanks for your reply :-) Attached is a picture of Hopefully! Koi in my pond......there are two of the smaller goldfish on the bottom left and right...bottom middle is one of the babies I found in July. My favorite Hopefully! koi is the one in the center...a blue-ish and black one with longer flowing fins.
