Spawn bound???? Can't Post

Hey,

I have a major problem. My engineering engineering class has a large tank with 15 or so koi. One of them who we believe is female has become large and round on the bottom. I have considered dropsy but by everything i have read this isnt so. She is slightly firm to the touch and does not appear to be disfigured(scales sticking out, bulging eyes etc.). I was wondering if any one could give me some insight on "milking her" or any other way to tell. Thanks

Hello koi kid

I am pressed for time this AM but will try to cover a few basis with my limited experience.
First if she is gravid and has no larger place that suits her, she will most likely absorb
the eggs back into her system as protein. Koi will not usally ovulate without a suitable environment.

Do not attempt to milk her!!!!!!!!! If she and has not ovulated u will more than likely damage or kill her.
How large of a tank, how many koi and their sizes would be helpful.

Thanks kgt1223,

The tank is approx. 420 gallons with 3 or so male that are around her size (10 or 12 inches) the rest of the fish (about 10) ar smaller and too young to breed). Its about 5 feet in diameter and 3 ft high. I have added artifical spawing medium but nothing is happening. Is there any chance that it could be disease and she is not pregnant. She has looked like this for over a month now.

Hey thanks for the advice. I really appreciate it. We set this tank up about 3 years ago with very young koi and have been raising them since. The koi i mentioned, a taisho sanke, is one of the orgional fish in the tank and one of hte few old enough to spawn. I have some pictures taken and i was wondering if you could take a look and let me know what you think. I would really be greatful. I'm becomming very woried about her.

I cannot be sure. I am not a trained vet. However, she seems healthy enough and judging by the scales which are not lifted and are quite large she seems to be just fat.
This by no means suggests that she is not heavy with eggs or has a tumor.
I would highly reccomend as a starting point to find someone with a pond willing to board her for a month or two and see what happens. If she is gravid then she will more than likely spawn. If she is just fat, she may possibly regain some of her structure. I have seen koi get like this when they outgrow their environment.

Good luck, Kiefer

I wrote this in response to your PM. Having read this post I do not believe that she would develop such a large size due to eggs in as little as one month. You may want to consider
bringing in an expert. However, if she is laiden with eggs, changing her to a different environment with any healthy males will induce her to spawn.

Moving here to a bigger home might be the answer. In my experience with tropical fish a fish that is that heavy with eggs sometimes dies if spawned. Wow I dont think I would spawn this koi Pirate I am affaried if you do you might wish you had not. Put her in a larger tank or swimmming pool of about 1000 gallons and put in spawning media. In about two weeks put a male in with her and watch them very close and see what happens. If you see eggs then you should be ok. If not remove her quick. I agree with Keifer that you might want to check with a vet to find out if it is anything other than egg production. Just be careful whatever you do. And good luck.Smile

Just did some research so dont spawn her. Ok she has got cancer or is egg impacted and needs surgery. If you try to spawn her she will die. Go to koi vet and read the artical on this and they will do surgery for free if you ship the koi.
