Spawning Pond. Can't Post

Hey, I was curious about building a small pond for spawning, then after the eggs were fertilized, I would remove the parents and place them back in my big pond and wait for fry to hatch. What's a good size pond, I don't want anything over 500 gallons since I am paying for this with my own personal money. What are some good measurements? Waterfall, yes or no? Just give me some advice.

P.S. I don't plan on spawning this year. So I have a long time to build it.

Good idea to build a separate hatching pond.If you can provide your breeding pair a spawning tank and transfer the eggs to the hatching tank afterwards would be better. You can use your spawning tank for hatching but you might loose all the good eggs and will not hatch because of the water contamination from the unfertilized eggs. Waterfall is a good and natural aeration, but strong one is to harsch for the developing eggs. They need a gentle aeration, like several small airstone placed on the corner of the hatching tank.

Ahh. Thank you, Gabriele. What is the method of transfering the eggs? Also do you immediately remove the eggs after they are fertilized or leave them there for awhile so as many as possible of the eggs can become fertilized? How many does are the couple in the spawning tank usually before they finish their part of the spawning? Koifishgirl I couldn't find the spawning part on that site, do you have a link? Lol. Lot of questions, experts come help.

One easiest way to transfer eggs to the hatching tank is to put spawning rope or brushes into spawning tank.Female koi will deposit her eggs on the spawning materials. You can remove the eggs as soon as the spawning session is over.Once the female will discard her eggs the male will simultenously fertilized the eggs.Sometimes spawning will last two or three hours. As soon as you see parents koi starts eating the eggs take them out of the spawning tank and isolate the female by herself to recuperate from long and wild bumping and chasing.(at least 12 to 24 hours and dont forget lots of aeration )BTW make sure that the water temperature of the spawning and hatching tank is identical or closer.Sudden change of water temp is not good for the eggs.

When koi eggs hit the water there is a tiny whole in the egg called a micropyle. This is where the sperm enters the egg. The very second that the egg makes contact with the water the micropyle begins to close. Whole process takes about
10 seconds. So, leaving the eggs in spawning tank will not help u in the fertilization dept.

I would reccomend that u give them a light washing off before placing them in another tank as they will be covered in milt that will eventually float to the surface and create a major slick that is way nasty!Frown

Good luck, KieferCool

Ahh thanks guys. What's some good measurements for a fry home? Remember no bigger than 500 gallons.

Edit: How many fry will I probably end up with? and is 500 gallons at the most enough if I plan on culling them? What time of the year should I start the spawning?

I don't know the spawning season in some countries or states but here in California, spawning season starts mid spring and early summer. It also depend on weather condition and water temperature.Best time to make them spawn is when water hit 68to 70 degrees F.

On 500 gallon tank you can keep fry as many as you want but you gonna end up with hundreds of babies.Unless you have a plan to built a bigger one like at least 3-4000 gal. in the future. If you are planning to raise them on that 500 gal.pond I would say 50 fry or less for whole year. After that you have to move them in a bigger place. As far as koi pond is concerned, the bigger the better.Wink

Gabriele, I would get another large pond but I just don't have the cash. So I'm going to stick with a little one, I'm already going to be broke from it. Also whats a good pump and and filter box for a 500 gallon fry pond?

If you can post more of the detail of your pond maybe lots of people can make a suggestion.Defenitely, submersible pump is not recommended to use on the pond with fry.Pump will sucked all the babies in your pond.

WowShocked Nice backyard, very neath set up you have there.Look like you have a lot of room for your project.I recommend to buid your growing pond beforehand so you can establish it.As of spawning and hatching tank just usea portable ones and set them up next to your growing pond. That way you can remove them any time you want once you transfer the babies to the growing pond.Just wait for few weeks untill the frys are big enough to live in a filtered pond.Just an ideaWink BTW thanks for sharing the nice pictures.Cool

Thank you Gabriele. I have much better pictures of my pond. Do you have AOL, MSN, or Yahoo Messenger? I can show you them on there and talk faster to you.
How much do spawning tanks usually cost? The extremely large blue tubs that some koi dealers have.

I just started my 1st koi pond this spring. I lost serveral fish by getting in to big of a hurry to put fish in the pond. the last 2 times i put fish in they have lived good so far. This morning i noticed some kind of eggs at the banks of my pond. What I'm wondering is how to tell if they are frog eggs or koi eggs? Can you tell me how to tell the difference?

If eggs are in the bundle foamy white stuff they are frog eggs.koi eggs are scattered all over the pond, and most of them you can find them stuck on the pond wall or plant leaves if theres any.Their sizes are of the size of pin head.Another thing if your pond have a lot of suds on the surface and you can smell an unusual odor, more likely your koi spawned.

Back to work, For the fry growing pond, Am I going to want a pump that turns over all 500 gallons every hour or more like 3? TT or submersible or both?

Re: [KoiOwner] Spawning Pond. [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi there,
my name is Diego and I live in Cordoba, Spain. I'm keeping and breeding Koi in a 5th floor terraced roof, over my flat. I'm using small doughboy swimming pools with DIY homemade barrel filters and UV clarifiers. The biggest pool or tank is 1600 liters, that is 422.7 USA gallons or 352 UK gallons (your life will be lot easier with the metric system...), with 220 liters of biofilter in three connected barrels.
The tank I have used this spring for spawning is 1350 liters (356.7 USA gallons). There were 3 males and one female (Sanke), sizes ranging from 35 to 40 cm (roughly 16 inches the biggest). If you use bigger Koi for spawning you should use a bigger breeding tank. The female, which is not big and wasn't very fat, laid around 20000 eggs, maybe up to 30000. The tank has got to siphons (diameter 2 inches) drawing water by gravity to a 250 liters biofilter, where a submersible pump takes the water to the UV clarifier and to the tank in a sort of small cascade. Some sort of plastic scouring pads placed at the shiphon's intakes partially prevented the fry being absorbed into the biofilter, although I ended up catching around 200 fry that were living safely for weeks. Additional aeration is provided by two 25 cm long air diffuser flexible tubes.
10 days after hatching there were probably between 5000 and 10000 fry. Feeding them with my Daphnia cultures was all right for a while, but they finally crashed due to overexplotation and rising temperatures. I had losses when started feeding them Artemia. Was my first time using them, and couldn't separate egg shells completely. Many fry ate egg shells and I believe they died.
Anyway, there were too many fry, and patterns started to develop so I could start culling. One month and a half after hatching I had probably around 1000 fry. Sequential culling decreased numbers to around 3000. I've been giving away a lot of small Koi, including blacks, orange, whites... Last weekend was the last culling session so far and there were around 30 to keep. It is amazing the low proportion of nice fry that one can get even using rather nice parents. You can have a look at some pictures of parents and selected babies at

I'm afraid is a different forum, I do participate in three of them ¿rather crazy, isn't it?

Hi,
Make sure that it is uv resistant or it will not last long. Also make sure that the material is fish safe and does not leak anything in the water that might kill koi.
