Stop them breeding? Can't Post

Hi

I’m a relative new comer to Koi husbandry, although I have kept other species of fish for many years.

My question may seem strange but is quite sincere. I have about a dozen 15” – 22” Koi that I have collected over the past year. They have put on a lot of growth ( length & girth since I purchased them ).

My dilemma is that I am really only interested in growing them on, and my aim is to enjoy their colouration and beauty, breeding is not really on the agenda just yet. I am also concerned over them damaging themselves during this process.

Now I know the fish have their own proposals in this respect, and it will possibly be beyond my control to stop them breeding anyway ie maturity, changes in the seasons will condition them to breed.

But I have no vegetation and no spawning media for them to use if this was to happen, will they breed regardless of this.

If the female are carrying roe, will holding them back cause any medical problems ie egg retention.

Help!!!!!

Hello Blade

It has been my experience that Koi in a larger environment with no spawning media will not be prone to spawn. Doesnt mean that it wont happenCrazy

Not to worry. If it does happen then they will all have a good snack and youll have a good reason to clean your filtersTongue. I have watched koi of all sizes spawn, and I have never seen one that was very seriously damaged. However,
in a mass or flock spawning, to many males may herd and try to spawn with a single ovulating female. This may be a problem for a single female. If this happens and u are concerned for her safety, remove her and 1 interested male into a seperate tank with a few mop heads and let them do there thing. U can remove male back into the main pond after the fun, but hold female in a clean tank with a little salt and plenty of O2 for a few days. This will give her time to recover as well as letting the pheremones that she produces prior to spawning to
attract the males to wear off of her.

Good luck, Kiefer
