Surprise! It's a koi! Please help! Can't Post

As I was sipping my morning coffee today my fiance ran in from the yard and announced "well, I guess the koi are breeding size". I raced to the pond and saw dozens of fry. We quickly got a bucket and a net and started catching the fry. Now, 3hrs later, we have two 10gal tanks set up on the kitchen counter with sponge filters running and about 25 koi per tank. We were totally caught off guard and have a zillion questions now, but first just a tad more info. The mother is most likely an orenji ogon, a kohaku, or a sanke, the possible fathers are an ugly sanke, an utsuri, a shusui. The is a slim chance that one of the parents is a goldfish.

Here are my questions:

1) Are the 10gal tanks a good set up for now?

2) How fast should the little buggers grow?

3) They are all a non descript pale grey/yellow/orange color now, when will their colors start to come in?

4) What are the best foods for color development?

5) We are thinking of setting up big, plastic tubs in the basement when the fry outgrow the 10gals. Will this work?

6) What else do I need to know?

The 10 gallon tanks wont work, the koi will outgrow them way to fast and the ammonia spike will kill them. The best thing for you to do is go get u at least a 1000 gallon kiddle pool and wash it very good with some dishwashing liquid and then rinse and salt it down good and then rince again. Fill with water and add decloronator if you are on city water, Get you a filter box and set a good pump in the box with a large of piece of your established filter mat as possible and take a nylon stocking, put the filter box and pump down in the stocking as to not suck the fry in the pump, If they are big enough to get out of the way of the pump dont worry about this. (It would be best if you could let the water set in the sun for about a week before you add the fry if you can. Just set the pump in the pool and let the water circulate) You can buy these pool for about 80 dollars and they are well worth it when it comes to having room for the koi to grow.

Start hatching you some brine shrimp now! Its simple just follow the direction, this is the best food for the color development, although I would just worry about keeping them alive right now. Also take some of your good koi food and put it in the blender and make a very fine powder out of the food, be carefull and dont overfeed, feed in very small amount 5 or 6 times a day if you can.

Also in the 10 gallon tanks do a water change everyday at least half the water, get you a 5 gallon bucket and clean it very good and fill with water and set u a airstone in the bottom of the bucket and of course a small 7 or 8 dollar air pump and let the water decloranate on its own to do your water changes with untill you get you a larger home for them. Then it is best to have another pool set up to do water changes with. The water needs to be as close to the same temp as the other. If you can get the water to turn green in the pool before you add the fry you will have live food in the pool for them to eat and this will help them grow.
There is no way to tell when the color will show up on the koi and you dont know what's what, age of the fry or the parent.

Check for barels on the fish if they are not koi throw them out right away as they are no good at all, will never have much color and just are not pretty fish and they will not reproduce when the get older. Dont go throwing them out now, give them a good month or two to make sure, The wiskers are so small it is sometimes hard to tell. But when you know for sure get rid of them so you will have room for the koi.
Also get you a good piece of the established filter and put it in the little filter box, this will be a established filter and will help with the water.

How big is the plastic tub? I would got ahead and set it up in the sun and let nature take its course, you can use all the space you can get to grow out these little fry. Just remember to keep a check on the water quality. Make sure the ph and ammonia and all stays good for the fry.

Good luck,
Keifer is a good one to private message to help you with this as he has had good luck raising large numbers of koi, he can let you in one some more info if I have forgotten anything.

I'm afraid putting any type of container out in the sun may not be a good idea for two reasons. 1) It was very hot (90F) here last week and may get as hot by the end of this week. 2) We have two young husky dogs, anything small enough that they can climb in it or knock it over will be messed with. Nothing under 3' deep is safe outside (and I'm not sure we want to dig another pond). We could put a kiddie pool in the basement would be the easiest solution.

I know the 10 gal tanks will not work for long, we just needed a place to put the koi for the first few days.
