T-Tiny fry's Can't Post

Hi,
I have about 10 baby fry's that are about an inch long..they haven't grown much at all. Any ideas as to how to fatten them up? Is this possible? They were all born at the same time...All 10 of these t-tiny one's look to be koi. They stay on the other side of the kiddie pool in the greenery. As for my other fry's they have grown at the usual rate.
Any info would be appreciated..
thanks

Usually the ones that are genetically predisposed to be slow growers wind up becoming "sibling sushi" for the big ones (tasty toby tidbitsShocked). They're more than likely genetic runtsBlush, but sometimes the most colorful grow extra slow so who knowsCrazy???

Hi,
Thanks for the encouraging words. So far the bigger one's cannot eat them..but, if they don't grow faster pretty soon, I will have to seperate them. All 10 of the little t-tiny one's are koi..no doubt.
Thanks again for the info..I just can't cull them..they swim and eat well and doing great..just their size is slow growing. Will keep ya' posted on their growth.

Re: [Mookey] T-Tiny fry's [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi
I am new to Koi breeding myself and the end of the summer at the start of September I bred two of the family Koi and came up with a massive amount of fry. I have had the fry in a small 1000 gal pool and their is a huge gap in between the smallest of the fry and the biggest of some 2 inchers. I am going to set up another pool soon as winter goes through here in Texas and seperate the sizes up then. Looks like their will be a bit of natural culling going on if the real little ones dont catch up. I would say that I am at around 300 to 500 at this point. Their was somewhere in the nieborhood of at least a 1000 when all the eggs first hatched. It was amazing to see them at that amount. Will post pics as they at

Hey MookieSmile,is it time for a t-tiney update yet? My toddlers have pretty well doubled in size since your last post on this so I suspect yours have likely done the same.

Hi Larz1,
Yes, my t-tiny fry's had doubled in size..they are still way behind the toddler's though. A lady took everyone of my fish the other day. I had 44 total..sure do miss them..and it has been a delight to raise them from eggs. I hope to beable to do this next year. The t-tiny one's were just slow growers..but, they have potential. Smile
Good luck on your toddler's..are you going to adopt them out or keep them?

Hi,
I had been told here on the board, that the t-tiny one's are slow growers and can become your finest koi. I did not cull any..I let mother nature do it for me. Read below to see my update on my toddler's.
good luck with your toddlers

Mother nature took a few, we selected a few dozen to keep and grow out, and the other 150 or so were adopted out to several people. We're adding a permanent hatchery pool in a few months so we can do the same next year. It is too much fun learning by watching them grow and change.

Re: [larz1] T-Tiny fry's [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi,
I wished that I had room to keep a hatchry. My patio for five months was a nursery. lol
I "did" have one from the bunch survive in my big pond. For three months I didn't even know he was there..of course I kept him/her and named her "FireFly." Will attach a pic', but it isn't the best picture. Firefly is very fast as you can imagine..so it is hard to snap a photo. lol It amazes me so, that he survived. He swims all around the huge fish in the big pond..they don't seem to mind. lol
I can't wait for next year..I will definitely do this again. It "is" awesome to watch them grow and change colors..they seem to take on their own personalities. I know a lot more for the next time around. It has been a learning experience and a wonderful experience.

It is an amazing thingSmile.
Firefly looks like an Ochibashigure in the early stages of development. You're gonna have a lot of fun watching this one grow up. We kept two much like it and one that has Kinginrin Scales as well.
Since we have a long streambed (it stretches most of the way across the backyard) we've decided to put a hatchery pool in the middle of it. That way when spawning begins we can just move the pregnant female to it along with the male we choose, let them do their thingBlush, and then move them back to the main pond.
Since we put all the babies we kept in the main pond it has been interesting to watch them develop a pecking order. When they were all small (under 3") they stayed together and the adults kept to themselves. As they grew larger (4"-5") they started segregating themselves by size and the bigger ones started swimming with their parents. Now about half are with the adults and the smaller ones hang out together on the other side of the pond. The largest is a Shiro Muji (over 6") and the smallest is Shiro Utsuri (abt. 2.5").

Hi Larz1,
Thanks for the indenification. He/she "is" a beautiful fish. I noticed when I had my fry's in the kiddie pool, that when the t-tiny one's grow a bit, they would branch off and hang out with the other bigger toddlers...before that, they would hang around together. lol It just amazes me so..and especially their "inate" instincts. I have seen your photo's of your fish in another section of the message board, and they are beautiful. Mine were born May 22nd...and they have their own baby book..lol No kidding. Blush
Good luck with your fry's..keep us updated Smile
