Taking the eggs or Tank spawning Can't Post

Hello everyone. I have been a part of this forum for a short while and I must say that I have really enjoyed reading all of the posts. My name is Kiefer. I am married with five great kids and I live in Tampa Florida. I have a 22k pond fiilled with very spoiled koi. My wife and children and I have enjoyed our pond for several years. We decided last summer that as a serious family project we would attempt to breed a few of our Kohaku. We are very serious about our family projects so alot of research has been done on this subject. We are now at a cross road though and must make a decision. I have heard that the natural spawning process can be extremely physical and many times harmful to the female koi. Also, I have read that mating koi may take days to begin spawning, and if not carefully observed around the clock, they may very well eat a good portion of the eggs or even suffer from ammonia posioning from the fouled water if not removed shortly after spawning. Taking these things into consideration I turned to the Southern Regional Aquculture Center which I discovered was only 40 minutes from my house!!!Cool I was befriended by 2 of the head research and development guys and they began to explain to me that there are many ways to propogate fish. They recomended that I attend their course in February where they instruct the local fish farmers on techniques for taking and fertalizing the spawn of fish. They assured me that with the proper instruction and necessary products (which they said they would give to me)Wink that the artificiall enducment to spawn and the striping of eggs and milt was very safe. He also added that only one male was nessasary for this project and that you would know with certainty the results of a breeding pair as opposed to adding 2 or three males to the mix and guessing. This all makes very good sense to me. We have already built an incubation tank for the larvae to reach fry stage. We have also constructed an above ground tank 12x14x4 feet deep. This will be used to raise whatever fry are left after cullings. I would like as many opinions as I can get from my fellow forum members as to the choice of tank spawning versus striping, given the resources that I have available to me. Your thoughts on this subject are important to me from either side of the spectrum. I intend to digitally document our project regardless of what method we use and will keep forum posted with pics and progress. Thank you in advance for all of your input.

Regards, Kiefer Tucker and Family

Hi Kiefer, I missed this post where you have introduced yourself. Is your pond 22 K gallons?! If so Whow! Most of us here are keepers but there are few like Douglezz, Bran, and a few others have experience breeding kois. Perhaps you can private message them. to nudge them into sharing their knowledge in this area. GOOD LUCK with the family projjject. Hmnn, I shud think about this. Crazy

I answered his question via a private message that he sent me. But I forgot to give him Efrens link just in case he wants to get a hold of him.

Re: [kgt1223] Taking the eggs or Tank spawning [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Kiefer (& family),
I'm new to this forum.
My name is Diego and I live in Cordoba, Spain.
I actually live in a flat (fourth floor), and I've got three small ponds in the terrace above my flat. They are 1600 liters, 1250 liters and 600 liters. I started rearing koi some few years ago. Last spring my Koi spawned for the first time, but they ate most of the eggs. I managed to rear some 80 survivors in a separate tank (more extra weight on the terrace!).
This spring I would like to try hypophisation (artificial spawning). I have gathered some technical papers in PDF format that are available in the web.
You can have a look at some pictures of my breeding activities at my web page, more precisely in the entry called "reproduccion". I'm sorry my page is in spanish, no english version so far, but hopefully you will enjoy the pictures.
Keep in touch, I'd like to hear about your breeding experiences.
Best wishes,
DiegoDiego Jordano

Muchisimas gracias Diego. I was born in the U. S. but spent many years abroad while growing up. Picked up spanish along the way. Cant wait to see your site. Will keep u posted on my breeding project. Do u have a regular email address? It is hard to post pics in forum due to limited file size restrictions.

By the way, yo vivo en Tampa Forida. Please excuse any mispellings, it has been a while. My pond is 22k and I have been keeping koi for 2 1/2 years. My regular email is ltucker2@tampabay.com.

Buenas noches, KieferCool
