The beginer Can't Post

Wink Hello all! I have a pond with 10 koi fishes for 8 years, some of them with big and round stomatch. Is that the right time for them to breeding?

Can anyone give me some opinion, whether have to shift them into the separate tank for breeding? Size for the breeding tank? How many fish in a tank? Thank you! Sly

From,
Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Usually koi will breed as the weather gets warmer not cooler. In UK, the breeding period is between march and June, May is usually the favorite. I'm not sure where you are located so I can't give you your koi's schedule.

Bloated belly can be caused by a number of things. As long as the eyes are not puffy and the koi is swimming normally, then it proabably rules out desiese or infection. Bloated belly can also be caused by a shallow pond. In ponds under 4' in depth, koi may start to turn from torpedo shape to rugby ball shape.

If you kois are ready to breed, it may be worth just adding a spawning rope into the pond, or a mop head will do the same. Monitor the female during spwaning as she will be prone to injury if there are a few excited males present.
