VERY pregnant KOI Can't Post

Hi all....new to the forum but needing some help. We have a 2000 gal watergarden with 7 KOI. At least one is a very pregnant female. She is SO huge she can hardly move through the water with her distended belly. The males seem to be ignoring her. We are worried this could be unhealthy for her if she doesnt spawn. Can she become eggbound? We think she has spawned earlier in this season as one week she's look fatter and then not so fat, etc. Now she is simply huge. Can someone ease our minds?

Thanks!

I'm not an expert by any means, but from what I understand if she is not stimulated to lay the eggs she should begin to re-absorb them into her body as protein. It is not uncommon among wildlife. Where do you live? This late in the season koi generally are finished with spawning.

We live in INdiana. Earlier this Spring we thought she spawned but not fully OR she gathered more eggs. It makes us nervous.

Thanks.....

Critters make their own rules. I've read some of your posts mentioning your mud ponds. I would assume that a mud pond of reasonable depth would tend to have cooler water than a typical garden pond, even in GeorgiaWink. BTW, how are the new ponds coming along. Holding water yet or are you still having to add steadily?

Hi larz1 the one mud pond is starting to hold water better and have started filling the second pond, I did not know that if I ferterlized the pond it would help it hold waterCrazy you live a learn every day I guess. Im happy to have one almost full and the second has about a foot of water in it, so Im hopeing in another good month I will have two full. We are getting alot of rain this week off the hurricane Denise, do that will help. I hope the other ponds hold water better than this one. To tell you how things go for me. well I filled my lowest pond firstSly Should have started with the highest, but I guess being female had something to do with that. Dont get me wrong Im not knocking females, its just that men tend to know more about this type of thing.

I don't know what the soil conditions are like around your home, but you might check on the availability of some bentonite clay to add to your water. It easily migrates to water leaks and swells to plug them off very quickly. A lot of ranchers use it to hold pond water for livestock in sandy/rocky areas.

I read somewhere very recently, that a lot of breeders use chicken poop as fertilizer for their mud ponds. I can't remember where I read this though. Crazy

Yes the more bio-active in the pond, the more muck that is produces and this is what help seal the pond. I think you produce more algie and when it dies it kind of clogs the pond, therefore sealing the pond.

Re: [fireworkblast66] VERY pregnant KOI [In reply to] Can't Post

I had completely forgotten about the chicken poop thing until First Timer's post.
I remember studying about commercial Japanese Catfish/Carp farms which had chicken coops built on piers over the water. The chicken waste dropped straight into the water supplimenting the fish feeding.
When the fish were harvested for food the processed fish byproducts (bone meal, guts, etc...) were then ground up, baked, and fed to the chickens along with grain.Shocked
It was tried here in the U.S. for a few years, but the chicken started tasting fishy so they had to quit.Unsure

Re: [koifishgirl] Mud pond construction [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi koifishgirl, I guess you are in Georgia. We are in Blairsville Ga. What area are you in? We have alot of red clay up here. I have started another pond, that I wanted to make a mud bottom pond. But everytime it rains, or it gets filled up, it goes down in a few days. I was wondering about your use of fertilizer, I believe you mentioned 13, will that effect the fish. I thought fertilizer was not good for the fish. I assume, you will fertilize and let the algea grow to seal the pond, and eventually add the fish. I had also questioned the benonite clay. I felt if one could get a good supply of it, one can seal the pond with it. As mentioned it will seek out the leaks and seal it. I hope to find out more about a clay construction pond. I may just have to try the chicken poop. Let me know any suggestions you may have. Thanks Lynda alias femmeartist51

Re: [femme_artist51] Mud pond construction [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Chicken poop is the best, I will have to find out how much of it to use, I have a 30 X 68 X 4 foot deep pond and I add 6 cups of fert, and two week add 6 more cups. If you can pack the clay it will help, take one of those packers that you can get at Home Depot and pack the clay down good, ferterlize good, You can put the koi in the pond and ferterlize at the same time as long as you dont over do it. You have heard of people ferterlizing the lakes and ponds with fish in the pond, well a koi pond is the same way. We have several big pond that is ferterlized 5 or 6 time a summer so I know its ok or we would have lost fish by now. I have lots of fry in my pond and was not worred went on and put in the pond what I needed as to help feed the fry and seal the pond. I live in Troup County Georgia. about 1 hours drive south of Atlanta Georgia.

Re: [fireworkblast66] Homemade filter [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Marshal
We are in the process of digging another pond. Also been figuring a way to make an inground filter, for this new pond. Can you explain how you made your filter? We thought of a very heavy covered plastic box, with a bulkhead at one end. Then of course the filter material. The water goes in one end and then of course our the bulkhead. We also designed an above ground filter using 1/2 oak barrel (lined, didn't want the fish to have all that left over alcohol that was soaked into the wood), used an old hand pump, ran pvc through the handpump, wasn't sure of how the old metal will effect the fish. We put filter material in it, a cover out of wood and a small pump to cycle the water out of it. I hope to hear how you produced your filtering system. Thanks Lynda and Al
