Congrats. If you have hatched babies do not treat the water. It will kill your hatched fry.

Re: [ucpondguy] WE HAVE LIFT OFF! [In reply to] Can't Post

it will kill the baby fry? Why is that?
what do I feed them now?
I bought brine shrimp eggs. But, it takes 18-40 hrs to hatch.
I don't think there's enough algae due this happening so fast. The spawn, transfer, etc.........
Do I still do the pee?
Should I wait about a week to switch them to a wade pool?
They are in about 10gallons of water rt now.

Shocked@#$%!

I had put the methlene blue in before I noticed they where in there. Didn't expect them to hatch till tomorrow, if not tuesday. And, I kind of wanted to treat the water before they started hatching due to the fungus on the eggs!

Ohhhhh nooo!Frown

I guess I'll have to wait and see! How sad, I was going to run out with the video camera to record our first fry ever! 15years worth of Koi!

Yup, hope that some make it.
As for feeding, their egg sac will hold them off a day or two.

There are tons of info in the web, I think that if you search on "spawning of koi" you will get a link about koi breeding and fry feeding.

Some people feed hard boiled egg crushed the first day, but only a little.
Or pinches of dry milk.

If your babies are still alive, you can get some activated carbon. Put it in a mwesh bag and drop in the fry tank. The more the better. That will remove any traces of the meds.

A good place to start with the fry food thing would be to google "infusoria". You will find a number of ways to grow them on any scale. Until you get that going, start working on hatching those brine shrimp. You can also go out and get some goldfish flake food. Although it should not be used as the main source of food it is a grea supplement. Crush the flakes into powder then very slowly add a tiny bit at a time. A really tiny ibt at a time!!!!!! If they do not coem up to eat any do not feed anymore that day. Eventually they will. Be very careful not to overfeed this.

Hope this helps.

Dear Gracie

I was only away for a moment master (Igor voice)

Ok not to panic. No time to pee now. First you need to go shopping.

You need 2 lettuces and 3 of those big 2 or 3 litre fizzy drink bottles. Put the kettle on, rip up a leaf from your lettuce and pour boiling water on it. when it cools down about 2 hours funnel it into one of the bottles. Place the bottle in full sunlight next to a window or a greenhouse if you have one. Do the same thing again with bottle number 2, 24 hours later. When you start doing bottle number 3, 24 hours after bottle 2 you can give bottle one to your fry. If you have any left in bottle 1 disregard it just make another culture. You will need to do this for a week. This is how we cultur inflosora.

In that week you should be trying real hard to find some daphnia. I'm not saying brine shrimp are useless, It's just if your fry don't eat them they will die and pollute the water. If you use boiled egg yolk it will pollute the water. If you use crushed up flake food it will give the fry constipation leading to hernias prolapsing and death. As well as polluting the water.

I think you may have to leave your fry in the bucket tank or watever it is untill they are free swimming. If you syphon some water out from the bottom of the tank or bucket top it up with water from your main pond. As the microspic thingys like inflosora will be in there not as many as in the culture your now making, But it might have different types.

If you have the paddling pool ready to move them into then pee in that, Only if you can get some daphnia. If not stick a few shovel fulls of soil in. Then float your bucket tank in that water untill they are free swimming then just sink it. They should be able to find their own way out. If not you have retarded fry on your hands. LMAO

But any way seeing as this is the first spawning don't get you hopes up for big time succsess.Next year you will be alot more experianced and of course ready for this.

Good luck

Re: [zoul] WE HAVE LIFT OFF! [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for everybodys advice!

I'm running around with my head cut off.

I'm going to go try the lettuce thing.

I did put some egg in with them, because I was scared they'd starve! I'd rather clean out the water and take the time.

We also took our chances and transfered them to the wadding pool. Don't think we lost any. But, it's been about 24hrs now since they started hatching and more and more keep showing up. I still see eggs. So, I assume they are all not hatched yet. It's so funny, because I look in their little pool and they're ALL over the place! And when they're stuck to the walls, it looks like they're looking straight up at you. With these BIG eyes! I call them baby sperms!

We checked the h2o today, and all levels are good.

As far as the brine, I put them in yesterday afternoon. So, I hope to see something here in the next 24hrs.

How often should they be feed once they start growing?
Can you over feed them?

I know I'll be asking more once things pop up.

And by the way, we've been transfering pond water to their little wadding pool. So, hope they get some on the build up from that.

Dear Gracie

Dont worry about feeding them anything bigger that the inflosora just yet. They will live off the eggsacks they hactched with for a couple of days and then they will be looking for inflosora and eating that for a week or so.

Whats a waddling pool ??? Is that like a paddling pool ???

Small spiders and gnats ect will be falling in your pond. Your babies should be pulling the legs of these for food, If you start feeding brine shrimp to early you will just end up with dead brine shrimp on the bottom of the pool. Same with the boiled egg yolks and crushed up flake foods all rotting on the bottom of the pool.

a Wadding pool is a baby pool that you buy for 10 american dollars. it's about maybe 40gallons. they went from 18 gallons to 40, now most likely to 200. We have to set up our tank inside the house to move them over eventually.

Re: [carla1119] WE HAVE LIFT OFF! [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey Carla,

Thanks for the support!

Everyone has been very helpful. But, I feel that I keep asking the same darn questions time after time. I guess because I'm so overwhelmed!

I do think they're so cute! I miss them when I'm not home. Or better said, gone for longer then a few hrs. Crazy HUH?

Now they are 4days old and seem much more active.
I've tried the lettuce experiment and pour the water in. I hope that's helped.
My brine shrimp haven't really started hatching yet. Wonder if we got a bad batch.
And they're in about 40 gallons of water. But yes, we have to set up our tank inside. Should we still use the same water they are in?
Also, what else do or can I feed them?

When we set up our tank inside...we used half and half..water from the tank and from the main pond...and city water...used the stress stuff at petsmart also....
I also used the egg like he told me too...but later ...3 weeks or so started feeding them the "first bites" from petsmart..it's like dust! lol...but they love it..just a pinch...will do them for about 6 hours...they love it!
I know how you feel..my husband gets to travel with his work...always wanted to go to France..but gave a chance up to stay home with the babies! Oh well..at least he understood and I will go another time! Wink
