What am I seeing? Can't Post

I'm new here and have just begun to read some of the posts that are available. I'm so glad that i have found you guys. I'll get straight to the question at hand. I have two gorgeous koi in my pond, each about 9 inches long. I have had them for YEARS. Unfortunately I have no idea about whether or not they are male and/or female.

I noticed yesterday that one of them is substantially fatter than the other. I had not noticed this before. It seems as though the belly is expanded left to right and drooping down a bit. The (ok, I have no idea about Koi anatomy so pardon my lack of knowledge of proper terms) but the "vent?" is protruding, also.

Am I looking at a female with eggs?

Lost and confused...
but trying to learn....

Nancy, Can you get a few pics? The koi with the large stomach may be sick and not eggs so it would be better if we could see the koi.

Looks like you have a male and a female and looks like you might get yourself a spawn this spring. Why dont you seperate the male and female for a few days and put the male in with her with some spawning ropes and see what you come up with. Beautiful female koi! She looks to be in good health.Wink Looks full of eggs. Good luck

I see a bunch of koi goldfish cross fish in with the koi so this is not the first time they have spawned. You need to throw the koicross out of the pond as they will never amount to anything and are just takeing up space in your pond. Color will stay bland and they will not produce as they are sterile. Not good looking fish anyways.

Re: [koifishgirl] What am I seeing? [In reply to] Can't Post

The babies that are visible in there showed up a week or tow after we added the spotted goldfish. We were under the assumption that it was a "she" and she came to us with eggs. I really never thought it through as far as how they were fertilized. We always thought they were just a bunch of goldfish. We have had tons of luck with prior goldfish spawning like rabbits int he pond.

No, I'm really not that dumb, I just never thought it through. So I suppose they are a result of either the female koi and the male goldfish or a female goldfish and a male koi. Sheesh, it's too much to decipher. Although, I was definitely puzzled as to why they never took on color. Atleast we have solved that dilema.

Ok so for part two......
Now that we think the one is a female and looks to be quite eggnant. What are we looking at as far as time? When should we remove her from the pond? How long before we introduce the male back in with her? How long should they be left in the baby pool? How many more questions can I ask without taking a breath?

Is there a place on the web that will answer all these questions for me?

I will take this moment to thank you in advance for all of your help.

Hi This is what I would do if I were you. Go get u a 1000 gallon inflatable swimming pool they dont cost that much. Wash the pool very good about 3 times to make sure you have got all chimical out of the pool. Fill with your pond water if you can or clean tap water and decolrnate if you have to. Place you a small pump in the water and get you a drum to make a filter for the pool. You can place a piece of the filter mat on top of a crate and hold it down with a big rock or something heavy. Make sure you put your hose at the bottom of the drum and let the water filter up through the mat as this will help filter the water. Lean the drum over the top of the pool so water will return to the pool. Put your female in for a few days by herself and dont feed her, just make sure that you put the pool somewhere that the water does not get to hot. Shade if you can. Put in some water plants or nylon ropes that you have seperated for her to spawn on, and then in a couple of days put the male in with her. They tell me that they will spawn in about 24 hours after this, then take both male and female out of the pool after they have spawned and keep female away from the male a couple of days to let her rest up and loose the scent that she has or the other fish will drive her crazy trying to spawn her.
Once you have got your spawn then you will have to make sure that you will have enough food to feed the fry, I would get started when you start the spawning process of raise some brine shrimp the feed the fry. After about a week you can take a blender and take pelets and ground up to feed the fry into a powder. Make sure you put something around the pump as to not suck the fry into this. I plan on building a frame using pvc and putting a fine mess net aroung the pump to keep fry out of pump, This should work so have fun with the fry. And keep us posted ok.
There is all kinds of info on the net that you can find about raising koi fry. Just type in what you want to know and you will find all the info you need. Feed her a high protein deit before you spawn her as this will help with the quality of the fry and will help them to be stronger.
