When and How? what do I need? Can't Post

Sorry for all these questions... I am newbie..

I moved into a new house with a very large pond, I have 2 full grown Kois (12-14 inch long) and 3 small (6-7 inch long), I have not plants at all in this pond, but trees around it so I always have a good portion (1/3) of the pond on shade; now my question here is : how do I know if I have males and females?, took one of the small ones to the local koi store and I was told I had a 90% change that it was a female, OK, if this is the case, How do I go by breeding them? (maybe one of the others where females).. how can I tell which is which?

What do I need to make that happen? I hear I need some kind of plants on the pond so the can lay eggs, is this true? I am sorry for being such a newbie. I want plants that can just float and not grow roots under, which ones I can use?

Thanks!

I am located in Maryland, US.

Hi Alien2xx,
If you are planning to breed your koi,and want to save the babies prepare an spare spawning tank like a kiddie pool from toys R us. $8.00 cost.To pick the female, look for a koi shape like 2 liter bottle of soda.Belly is bloated with eggs and if you feel the abdomen it is soft.the male abdomen or body is firm.Another way to find out if the koi is male specially this time of the year, feel the gill plate of the koi,if its rough and feel like a sandpaper , thats a male. To start spawning, fill up your kiddie pool with pond water at least 5" below the top portion. If your weather forcast in your area is stable at 68degrees or above, net the female gently and put it in a tub,(don't lift the koi out of the water)with full of water and transfer her into the spawning pool. After an hour introduce the male. Gather a clean mop head ,long stringy algea or any soft material that they can deposit her eggs.Best time to put the koi in the spawning pool is late afternoon. The next morning, around 4:00 or 5:00 am they will start spawning. You will notice the male chasing the female and bump her around and nudging her to the side of the pond.Approx.time period is 3 hours. if you more question just go back to the forum and theres a lot of helping people will take care of you.
Oh BTW after spawning leave the the eggs in the spawning tank and put the parents back to the pond or else they going to eat eggs.

Good luck

Efren

Re: [alien2xx] When and How? what do I need? [In reply to] Can't Post

Let's see if I can answer this:

First of all your koi that are under 10" are not mature enough to breed .. plain and simple. Secondly, the two that you have that are over 12 inches long can be both males or both females.

As a beginner, I could try and describe to you the difference between a Male and a Female koi, but you still may not see it without more experience in looking at koi .. lots of koi.

But you will be able to tell a Female koi once it gets impacted with eggs because the stomach area gets bloated out ... Just the stomach and not the sides! Sometimes people are unable to determine a female koi that's full of eggs from a Koi that has developed a disease called "Dropsy". To an untrained eye, they look similar.

Anyway, for an inexperienced person like yourself ..better let nature take care of it. The bottom line here is. If one of your large fish is a female and impacted with eggs and the other one is a male, the male(s) will start chasing it all around. This is a sure indication that it's ready for breeding. At that point, you can put some water hyacints or something similar around. If you have string algae, they will also use that as a breeding medium. A few mop heads (clean of course) tied to styrofoam floats would also do the trick.

You can always throw a few of these mop heads into the pond and see what happens.

BTW: I have seen fish breed with and without a medium. Seems to make no difference to them when they feel like it.

Best Regards
Bran

Wow! thanks a lot, this helps me a lot, I'll take a closer look at them... the temperature here is around 80-92 degrees and I spected it to be like this for the next 2 months or so, Is it to late for them to have babies (if one of the is a female I mean)? We had a very bad/bad/bad winter and so cold, 2 weeks ago I was still wearing a sweter, it was cold, so I think they just 'revive' 100 persent (so I can see them moving a lot and with a lot of energy).

Thanks, I'll keep you posted.. :-)

btw, I am so glad to find this forum, I think is a GREAT forum!! thanks again guys!!

Re: [BranMuffin] When and How? what do I need? [In reply to] Can't Post

Ok, this is another newbie question LOL, anyhow I've two koi and several goldfish. As of late I've seen most of the fish singling out one of my regular fancy goldfish. Do koi and goldfish well you get my drift I'm sure LOL. I know that Koi are related to goldfish and well after having these other fish for four years I've seen no sign of any breeding.. I'd really love to be able to do so, so that I can share with the family next door who has also started a pond but cannot really aford anything but feeder goldfish, and I think that it would be an enjoyable intrest to get into . Any clue if I should look for the same signs on gold fish as I would on koi to tell if their male or female as well? Thanks for any help :)

Koi and Goldfish will breed if they're old enough (2 yrs+) and if they're big enough (10" +). However any koi under 12" may have immature and undersize eggs which dies easily. The fry's from these eggs have a very poor rate of survival.

oK, Thank you BranMuffin, My goldfish are four years or so with me now, not counting whatever they were went I first got them. The Koi I've only had a month and only one of them would near the 12'' mark, so I've a while to wait for them to spawn. But not once have I seen my goldfish doing so, at least proof of it. What might I need to look for? do they build egg nests? attach them to plants? Or should I just do a search on this subject? :) thanks again for your help!

A female koi will develop eggs and once they're ready to breed you'll know it, because the males will start chasing it around. If you have the proper breeding medium i.e. String Algae, plants with long roots or leaves, then the males will start slapping the female around literally. This forces the eggs out and since the eggs has a sticky substance on the outside, they will start clinging to anything, sides of your pond, breeding medium etc. Then the males go around and fertilize the eggs as they begin releasing their sperm.

The little eggs look like small salmon eggs. They are round and have an clear exterior. If you look closely, you will see a black dot or a pair of black dots inside these jelly type eggs ... those are the eyes of the fry.

Permitting weather (and pond) conditions, they eggs will begin to hatch within a week and continue for about 5-8 days. The Fry's are about 1/16" in size and they try to remain within the breeding medium for protection.

Addtional Notes:

A Female Koi can lay up to 250,000 eggs. But nature has a way of reducing this size down considerably.

1) When the eggs are laid, it becomes a feeding frenzy with all the other fish including the parents. So immediately, you will lose about 2/3rds of them.

2) About 1/2 of the remaining eggs will not get fertilized and die while the others from other causes such as bacterial infection. These eggs are White in color (instead of clear) and some of them will be covered with tiny fuzz. (Rotten Eggs!)

3) More of the remaining eggs will be sucked in by the pump.

4) When the Fry's hatch, some of them are dumb enough to go out into the open and becomes food for the other fish. While still others will try and hide into the drain .. the suction area of the pump.

This is basically how things go in the Koi World. Some people will purposely put in some fake breeding medium such as clean Mop Heads. And once the breeding is over, they will take that out and put it into a sterilized tank for hatching. This way, they can save more fish.

The breeding usually takes place in the early morning hours (between 5-9 am). You can't mistaken it because they really make a lot of splash and the female is beat up pretty good. If the female is weak to begin with, it could cause them to die.

One curious thing about Koi is that when the Fry gets to be about 1/2" in length, the adult koi seems to leave them alone. Don't know about Goldfish. It's like they recognize that it's one of them and not food.

Oh yes, breeding can destroy your plants.

Best Regards

Re: [BranMuffin] When and How? what do I need? [In reply to] Can't Post

Ok , wow thank you! I've just gone out and bought several new potted plants which have already begun to grow within the first day of having them in the water soo I'm praying for a chance to see this happen :) If simply for a one time expericece.. I am worried though for our filter does sit down into the pond so it can create a water fall effect, hopfuly they'll be wise and should they spawn they'll do so away from he :P

But I've noticed from day one that several fish have choosen at least one of the others to chase around, and when I brought home both kois a month ago they took right to chasing that fish around as well, shall I assume then this one is female? and they're not playing a game of chase ? or will fish single another out to pick on somewhat? (I'm just too new at this and clueless at what I'm seeing :)
