Your females don't know they are only 12" long, the only know their ovaries are working just fine! We had 2 successful spawns last spring and both females were about 10" at the time. You will know soon enough because the males will chase them around the pond and press them against the sides to get them to lay their eggs if they really are pregnant. It can be a pretty fun show so enjoy itCool.

Where do you live? Do you have winter months? Koi can spawn as small as 6 inches if they are mature. Some koi just dont grow well but will still reproduce and at a young age. Koi spawn in the spring of the year when the temps are starting to warm up, temps of 68 deg will start them into the spawn. How long have you been keeping koi? If you really want to spawn some koi, you will need a large pool for the fry to start them off. I would suggest that you get at least 4 pools of 1000 gallons. Set the pools up and let the water turn green, place your male and female koi in the pool with some spawning ropes and let them do their thing, they will start the spawn at night and best time is to put them together on a full moon. First seperate the male from the female for a month and then put them in the pool that has set up for the water to turn green and they should spawn for you, you can make your own spawning ropes its easy to do. As long as you keep good green water you dont have to worry about amonnia spike
