basic breeding questions Can't Post

I have a pond, 6'x10'x3', located outside in the country. When do Koi breed, and when should my pond be cleaned out leaves, algae etc? Should I change the water in the early spring, or wait until after the new koi have grown? I may have lost my fry when I cleaned the pond last year. Also, being outside, Bullfrogs have made their home here too. OK pro's, don't laugh. How do you tell the males from the females? Last do I need an area in the pond that the new Koi can go to for refuge from the other fish, frogs, and birds that visit.

Dear fireman130

Koi breed when the weather is suitable for them, and water conditiond as suitable also. Things like stress over crowding and bad water quality will stop them.

You should never change all the water in your pond in one go. Algae, leaves ect can be removed with a net or stick.

You should discourage bullfrogs from your pond, as they are preditory maybe if you put a small fence around it or even dug a natural pond elsewhere.

Sexing koi is never easy males tend to be more stream line or torpedo shaped while females tend to be rounder. males develope smale bumps on the gills and front rays of the pectorial fins. also the vents are differnt shapes but that entails removing the fish and having a look.

if you can you should remove eggs to an area where you can keep an eye on them. just another reason to have another pond.

And no i'm not going to email you as you will have loads of questions i'm not going to answer on a one 2 one basis when alot of people could learn.

Dear bboop321

from what i've seen bullfrogs will swallow/eat anything that will fit in their mouths. Including other bullfrogs.

Hello, sexing is only difficult when the koi are young, if they are feed well, they will develope into the right shapes, and then you can just look and see which is male and female! Just wait and in time you will notice the differences as well as the behavior is different! Also to help hide your new koi or small koi, you can put pieces of 1ftlong pastic pipe in the pond, they will swim into this to hide if they need to, and this makes it very hard to see them and to get them out! That is for birds or other predatores. The pipe should be at least 6in diameter, that way they dont get stuck in the pipe!

There are toads, and bull frogs... are you sure you have Bull frogs... Have never had a problem with toads... don't believe they eat Koi eggs (little help here please) but have never had Bull Frogs... I beleive that they BF do eat eggs butnot toads.... Toads...just yell all night.. and lay eggs in the pond to clean out... if the Koi don't eat them!!!

Re: [jimar1] basic breeding questions [In reply to] Can't Post

what does it matter about toads and bullfrogs their all practicallly the same animal and i think toads can eat the eggs too but i'm not to sure
just a few breeding questions
for when you tell if it's a female or a male how old do they have to be to tell i have a fish that i've had for almost 2 years and she's already building a nesting spot in her tank and looks to be just a little bit bloated or PG my question is will it be a danger to breed her or should i wait alittle while i mean she's not the smallest fish in the world she's about 10 in. or more

for the females how long does it take till she's ready to spawn? what i mean is should i wait till she's huge or what?

if i can breed her this year what will i need to get to use for breeding her (ex: spawn ropes, pools etc. tell me what i need but cash is tight right now)

that's really all i can think of please let me know if you can help i would be much grateful since she is the only fish i have and i don't have a pond just a 29 gal. tank
thanks,
Sara
