can goldfish and koi cross breed? Can't Post
We have three large koi (a foot and 1/2) that are about 6-8 years old in a pond with a goldfish that is a few years old (8" or so) and about 150 babies. We've seemed to find two variations to the babies and wondering if its possible for them to cross breed. If so, how can you tell which are koi or if they 1/2 koi and 1/2 goldfish?

yes koi and goldfish can interbreed ,at the age of 2-3 months if you see barbels on them they are koi if not then there goldfish but i am not sure what crosses look like ,hopefully somebody will be able to tell you .

Yes, they can apparently it happened to me a few summers ago, they were alive but I knew that they were a muts because I had a few goldfish in them so i got rid of the batch. I don't know if its true but I heard from koi owners that the butterfly koi were derived from a koi/goldfish breed.

I was given 129 Juvenille Koi and as I added them to my pond, I examined each one. The only pure gold colored fish did not have any Koi charectoristics. My friend who I got these from did not have any goldfish in his pond. Maybe it came in plants from another pond, we don't know. I have often thought about this cross breeding possiblility.

i'm starting to lean towards them being goldfish because they have short thick bodies and no barbels. however, most of them are koi colored so my best guess is a mutt. as soon as i have a camera, I'll try uploading pictures
