culling fry/buying fry Can't Post

can you tell me at what age would you buy fry or small koi that are 3 inches. What do you look for. And can a fry with no red spot on the head (tancho) become a tancho later, that kind of thing. cuda

cuda....

Generally....fry can surprize you with their potentials....can turn into for ex: a Tancho....etcSmile

I would perfer looking for at least 5 inchers.....moderately cheap for me and better at telling quality....etcCool

BTW: How old are 5 inchers anyway? 5-7months?

When buying fish for quality...i usually look at atleast 5inchers. Usually cheaper and usually easy to see if fish is quality or culls. And if 3inchs are cheap enough, I go around looking for fish with potential that people havent purchased already.

It is very hard around here to buy large koi! It was good to hear that it is also hard other places. Well, I do really mean that it is good that you can'ttoo. I just wasn't sure why it is so hard. I do know that people buy them up, good quality or poor quality around here as fast as they can get them. And, I've gotten into the development of them, quality of them and need to learn and I don't have anyone except this forum to learn from!!!! So thanks for patience.

cuda....

Well...like foot long koi can be found in a couple of places here....but the problem is that they don't restock their koi very often...so the same ones over and over again...Unsure

In Hong Kong.....you can easily get any size koi of nice quality.....I visited this street once there and there are like koi and fish shop all down this street.....100's on koi stores...Laugh

I spent my whole day there look around....LaughTongue

and this one shop has imports that are easily 3 feet in length and each of these big ones have won koi shows and their certificates are all around that shop.....Smile

found a huge yamabuki, couple of high end kohaku's, one awesome showa....etcCool

Hey Cuda,
It is tough to evaluate Koi at 3" unless you are a pro (not meTongue). There were 5 breeders/vendors at the OKC Koi show last weekend and I don't think they had more than 1 or 2 under 5"-6" for sale. If there are any Koi Shows in your area that might be a good place to go shopping though. Breeders and Vendors of high quality Koi from several states were in OKC with much higher quality than you would expect to find at most of the local shops. (In fact the Baby GC was purchased from Eastern Nishikigoi Saturday morning before the show started, moved 100' to the show tanks, and entered on the spotWink)

Thanks Larry

over memorial weekend I am going to maryland. i have also found a place in Allentown. One of my newer koi that i'd bought died today, it was about 6". when i had gotten it home it was so stressed the fins had turned yellow and it appeared to have small blood veins running through. i wasn't happy about this but i think the problem was accumulative, it had just been through too much by the time i'd gotten it and brought it home. it was lemon ogon. only one i've found. At any rate, i think you are right, it doesn't make sense to try to guess at 2 or 3 inches. They are now about 3 and 4 inches and growing good! cuda
