do BIG koi eat little koi? Can't Post

Crazy hi guys,

really wierd thing just happened.

I introduced four 4" inch tategoi to my pond today and all the other fish seemed to be chasing them about immediatley.

The smallest fish in my pond (before I put the new guys in) is about 12" and the majority are about 18" to 24" fish.

I put these new fellas in and the larger fish seemed to want to chase them about. I am a bit worried incase my lovely new fish ( a kohaku, a gin rin siro bekko, a showa and a gin rin showa with a really clear head) get eaten.

Has anyone heard of this sort of thing happening before please?Unsure

cheers all

Ray

I think a big koi will pretty much eat whatever it can fit in its mouth, which includes young koi. Eventually they recognise the fry as other koi and don't eat them, but I'm not sure what size this is at.

If its possible, I'd recommend putting them in another tank until they have grown to about 6 inches, as this is from what I've read a size that will prevent eating.

There seems to be a get aquainted period for Koi. It is not unusual for my big koi to chase smaller koi around when I first add them to the pond. My big koi even chase the new koi around when they are too big for them to eat - 8 -10". They will do this even if I have just feed them, but the next day all seems to be fine and they will all be swimming together just great. I added ten 4" koi to my pond Friday. Today all are fine and when I feed them, the little ones are sucking up food beside the big ones.

I wouldn't put fish smaller than 4" in with mature koi. If you have another tank, keeping the little ones seperate would probably allow them to grow faster as the bigger ones do get the most food.

Hi,
I also reacently placed four 4-inch fingerlings in my main pond. The bigger koi chases them for a while for the first day, but now they are all friendly to each other.Blush

Wink good news.

24 hours on and all seems fine at the moment.

My little un's are enjoying some cover in the planted area of the pond where the water is very shallow and the big guys can't get at them too easily.

From time to time, the 4 of them seem to like to take a trip all the way round the outside of the pond sticking very close to the edge and today they were almost sharing food with the others.

Heres keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks for all your posts guys

Ray
