female koi lays at bottom after laying eggs Can't Post

I was wondering if anyone know its normal for a female koi to just lay at the bottom of the pond a few days after she laid eggs. Today is Thursday and I believed that she laid the eggs on Sunday. She was swimming around normal a few days ago but just not eating, but today I saw her just laying at the bottom. She only moves when I lean over the pond to look at her. Can someone pls help..Thanks...

You did not post your water parameters, and that is a big factor after spawning. Spawns always produce a great deal of extra ammonia, which irritates the gills and weakens the Koi, along with a great deal of DOC added to the water. This can weaken them a great deal and prolong their recovery time.

Re: [larz1] female koi lays at bottom after laying eggs [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi there larz1

I tested my water quality and it was a bit on the off so I did a 25% water change today. My readings were

PH was at 9.0
Ammonia at 0.25
Nitrite at 0.3

I believed that the water change will help my water quality. I will need to do another test tomorrow morning to be on the safe side. You got any other suggestions?

I assume your water is fairly warm, and with elevated ammonia and high ph combined they are all likely suffering from gill irritation. I'd get some amquel or chloramex in the pond if I were you and probably salt to .03 to reduce nitrite stress. Water changes will help, but I think these steps are called for as well.

HI,

I added some salt and reading is at .18. I also did another water change and added some conditioner to the water. Today, my female that was laying at the bottom is swimming alone with the other koi but the only thing is that she will not eat any food when it comes to feeding time. Other then that she seems very normal. I ll give it a few more days to see if she starts eating regularly. I am also planning to add some more O2 to th e pond by adding another air pumps and stones. Hope that help.

It can take several days for them to recover, but extra work to get the water cleaned up makes a big difference. Spawning produces a huge ammonia spike that takes most biofilters too long to deal with on their own. Have you removed all the eggs yet? Getting them out of the pond, especially the infertile ones, will help as well.

Hi,

Yes I did remove all the eggs and added a bit more salt. The reading is now at .26. I think this will help on the parasites. However, today I noticed that she have trouble opening her left gill. Her right side seems normal. You think she might have gill rott and should I take her out of the pond and quarantine her alone in a hospital tank. By the way, she is still swiming with the others but still is not eating. I noticed she goes for the food and then spits them out a few seconds later. Tats is strange to me...

One thing to consider it the fact that they all likely gorged themselves on eggs before you removed them all. It is commonplace.
I should have mentioned this sooner, but I would not be feeding them anything for several days. You are only adding to the already overtaxed bioload, and Koi can go for long periods without food. It won't harm them, and it will allow the water and the fish to recover more quickly.

If you are comfortable netting her out to inspect and put in a hospital tank that would be fine, but put a friend in with her. Koi do better if they are not alone.

Re: [larz1] female koi lays at bottom after laying eggs [In reply to] Can't Post

I will not feed them for the next few days but it seem to me that the other koi in the pond is so hungry cuz everytime they see me, they hover up to the surface and begs for food. Anyhow, I am planning to get an airpump today to add more oxygen to the pond because its been in the 90 degrees these past week. That might have something to do with the female koi be sick or tired like. If her condition does not changed I ll net her up this weekend to have a closer look at her. I ll post a pic of her up as well this weekend.. Thanks for all your advice so far..
