Depending on the size of their mouth, you can used well crushed pellet to feed your koi.

I put pellets into a container that I can fit a hand blender into. I grind the pellets to near dust like consistency and feed my fries on these.

you can feed this from day 1? i have fry that are around 5 days old, real tiny, i am giving them egg yolk mixed with boost, and brime shrimp, but i am not sure they are eating any of it, they are in the pond and it is hard to tell if they are eating. it would be a lot easier if i could crush up pellets. will they eat this you think?

Not knowing how good your eye sight is, I'm very sure they are eating the food you place in the pond if you have placed it close enough to them and/or they congregate around the place where the food was placed.

I understand brine shrimp is orange in colour. When the fries consume it, their tummys turn orange. Have you seen this occur?

I have given my fries egg yolk as well. Liquified before given.

If you don't have access to a hand blender, try a mortar and pestle or a hammer and have pellets sandwiched between a clean towel to crush the pellets instead.

Personaly i bread loads of daphnia these have an amazing ability to self replicate and are very natural and extremely healthy.

Once you start feeding crushed foods and brine shrimp your water quality goes to poo very fast and you have problems with constipation on small fish this can kill them. And it isn't very good for big fish either.

If you have them outside you will find after a week or to that gnat lava dosent last long. so get alot of buckets out in your garden and a fine net and fast hand to keep them gnats down.

thanks, i guess you are right, they have to be eating something ,but they are so little,i have to look hard just to see them, only 5 to 6 days old i am going to continue with the brime shrimp and egg yolk, i have enough shrimp for one more batch. how do get daphnia? there are no stores near me except walmart that sell anything for fish. i order my food on line. maybe in a couple of weeks i will try the crushed pellets, i fed this to my last batch last year and they did fine . tell me how to make them daphnia!!!!

Hi, my fry are still tiny also. I found out that peranomes (not sure the spelling) that happens in nature naturally. That keeps the fish small, so not to outgrow their area. So you need to change the water often. I have had to use a bucket to try and get the water out without the fry in the bucket.

I have fed my fry ground up krill, flakes and koi pellets. I tried to hatch out brine shrimp from eggs, it didn't work. They have been growing slowly with the ground stuff I have been feeding them. Got the formula from the pond guy two towns from us. He feeds his fry this, his where hatched about the same time as ours. His are alot bigger, so I asked what we have done wrong. Well he said feed them this formula at least 4 times a day. Cover the whole top of the tank with this formula. Since we have been doing this, they have grown. I have some larger ones in there now. I was told these are going to eat some of the smaller ones. These koi in the tank, that grew so fast, one person told me are usually single color koi. The larger ones are called Shooters. So this guy in another forum told me. They will definitely go after the smaller ones. He said to look and see what happens when these shooters get close to the smaller fish, they sure scurry away. Hope this helps. I don't know why but I have lots of tadpoles in my tank. Guess I have to get a net and remove them. Or I am going to have lots of frogs around here. Take care, Lynda
