how will i know? Can't Post

I just got some small Koi, biggest is about 5 inches long, and I was wondering how will i know if my Koi are trying to mate? I really dont have any room nor the time for a whole 'wutever you call em (school?)' of baby fish... How old are they when they become that long? Do they mate at that age? Also, how do I tell the difference between a male and a female?

Don't worry, at this size, your kois will not breed! It is generally at around 2-3 yrs old that kois start to sexually mature for breeding. In terms of size, that would be approx. 40-50cm. Of course, there is a possibility that kois can breed at a younger age and smaller size but unlikely.

The males will be chasing the female round the pond and nudging it on its side. It is difficult to differentiate between a male and female particularly when they are young like 5". However, as it grows bigger, a big difference would be that the female are usually rounder like a torpedo at the end part of the belly. The males are slimmer and it has a hard plate on its gills which can sometimes be confused with some bacterial infection.

You can find out more by looking up reference books about koi regarding sex differentiation.

Following on from Johnson, the fins on males are usually a little longer than the females fins. But again you won't see this clearly until they get much older. A freind of mine seperates the male and female kois in two ponds, not so much to prevent them mating, but to prevent the damage caused during this period. Mind you he has Grade A japenese koi which he bought for about £1,000 - £5,000 a piece. I'm very jealous Frown.

Wow 5000 pounds for a koi! Very very expensive! They must be absolutely stunning!

Stuart, our koi gathering at Dr Tan's house is on the 24th. As agreed, we want to have you with us next year but probably at a different venue. Make sure you start to save the money required and don't go buy another lovely koi at least for the next 12 months!WinkSmile

Have a nice day!

Johnson

Thanks for the thought Jonson I appreciate it. I would love to come over next year. I can't wait to meet you all.

Yes he has some stunning koi, I went to the Internation koi show last weekend and seeing the koi there (none were over 70cm), in my personal opinion I would say that his koi woul dhave won many prizes had he entered them.

Oh, also don;t worry about me buying more koi. I have just sold mine and my dad's excess stock of 40 6" - 9" koi, nothing special at all, you know the ones that are ok colours but so messed up you can even put a variety on them Sly. But as we were getting them out of my dads equivalent to a Japenese mud pond in deep Essex. We found that ever now and then we would net a few 1" koi. So after getting rid of our excess stock, we now have another 60 fry on our hands, along with the 100 that I have left from my Shusui & Yamabuki romp session Crazy.

Don;t get me wrong, I love koi and I am a true koi keeper, but I just keep getting more and more. I can;t find it in my heart to cull any either Frown. What did they ever do to deserve it. I canbe a right wuss sometimes I know.

Stuart
