There is a garden shop next to my home where the owner once in a great while will sell koi. His pond is fenced in and it is obvious that he cares for them well and we talk pond once in a while and koi, although he doesn't know a lot of detail. So he told me he was selling some of his koi. From a distance I had always been impressed with the reds. Went there and cripes, or should I say carps, there were no barbells on any of the fish. so I went back in and told him that if he had koi, it seems the koi may be bred out of them, teasingly, as there are no barbells. He said, "well, they come later in their life with my koi." I looked at each one of them and not one of them had them out around 10 he was selling. He use to tell me a lot of stories about a grader in the area who goes all over the US telling him he has koi worth thousands of dollars etc, something about a diamond point..... I was soooo disappointed. He was very frustrated with me when I left because I bought one fish and then I didn't put it in my pond but gave it to a neighborwho has goldfish. Could his koi have been bred out? Also, he tells me he has purple koi. I haven't seen them. But it's another one of the things that go on around here, I think. It was very disappointing. cuda
