koi fry color question Can't Post

SmileHi, I just got about 100 or so fry from my friend who bred grand champion sankes and the fry turned out ugly, so he gave half to me. He got about 40 peach colored ones, and the rest are peach colored, and black and white and grey mixture. Now how do I tell which ones are going to turn out ok, and which ones I will cull. He and I were both hoping for some red, but no red on any of them, just peach. Will the peach turn to red or orange? Do their colors change? I don't know a whole lot about fry, just koi. Thanks, pondgirl. Also, what do you do for filtration? I have most in a 12 foot kiddie pool outside, and half bublers around the sides, and just do water changes weekly, and declorinate the new water. This kiddie pool has been set up since june, so it's all cycled and everything. Thanks in advance, pondgirl.

Re: [pondgirl] koi fry color question [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello pongirl,
there is a lot of color change during the first three months of life, and more changes after that! Red color usually don't show during the first months. It starts
as light orange in many cases, later it becomes deeper as Hi develops.
What age and size are your fry?
You have to be patient. Fry that might look rather uninteresting when they have one and a half or even two months can change quite dramatically. On the oposite, sometimes you get fry that show strong Hi when they are very young and later this Hi just fade away.
I'm attaching a couple of pictures. These are Kohaku and Sanke fry born in mid may 2004, and the pictures were taken the first of august. Have not recent pictures of these fry, but most of them have markedly improved.
However I must say that there are not more than ten young koi worth to keep, and I started with several thousands...
Good luck,
Diego

Re: [estanque_koi] koi fry color question [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks so much for the info, I am still learning. They are around 4 weeks now I'm guessing. They were a late september batch. I have half inside the house, nice and warm, and they are growing rapidly. Most I would say are half an inch to an inch max. I see some orange popin through on the sanke ones. I was worried there would be no red at all. I have most with a orange/yellowish head and the rest of the bodie looks sanke. I have 2 kohaku, but the parents weren't kohaku? Genetics are weird.Crazy They are growin great thought, and I'm soooooooooooo excited every week I see more and more orange, and some dark orange poppinn through. So who knows. I have 1- I spotted that has red eyes! I love that, and hopefully they will stay that color, and hopefully he/she makes it! That one has real prospects I'd say, but ya never know. I have about 10 gin rins too!! Really pretty. Anyways, thanks for the info, still learnin about fry. pongirlSmile
