Dear pondlover1

Female koi are mature at about 2 years onwards or 8inches, but dont have very good eggs untill they are about 5 years old as the shells tend to be quite thin untill then and the offspring tend to be weak as they hatch easly.

Males tend to mature a little quicker than females but don't grow as fast.

when should I start looking for a eggs or hatching? any kind of sign? I'm very new to this, I've had fish for years but they have never mated before and the pond was much smaller, now my pond is about 700 gallons and my koi have more areas to hide! any info is appreciated. thanks

Depending on the water temperatures the eggs should hatch within 3-5 days.

Female Koi begin producing eggs within a month of a spawn, and will slowly build their size throughout the cold season (if you have one), and then spawn in the spring most of the time.
