koi or goldfish fry Can't Post

Hello.

We have had an interesting experience with koi breeding. Our 3-month-old puppy tore into our pond plants, ripped them out of the plant pots, and tore the water hyacinths to shreds. We rescued the plants we could and put them into a temporary holding tank until we could find time to repot them (and train our puppy to stay away from the plants!). A few days later my husband noticed hundreds of tiny fish in the holding tank. So, I think it was a lucky break that the plants had to be removed from the pond. Now we can watch the new fish develop without the worry of the larger fish eating them all.

Does anybody have any ideas what we're going to do with that many little fish? I wonder how long they take to grow to an inch long or so. We could release some of them into a large pond belonging to our cousin. Our pond is only 1,000 litres, and we bring our fish inside for the winter. Our cousin's pond is in the country and is approx. 50 x 100 feet and quite deep.

Regards,

TL

I think it generally takes a month to two months to reach an inch long for most fry.

And as for how to tell if they're koi or goldfish fry, from what I've been told, goldfish fry are *never* any color other than gray/olive when they're born and this can be easily seen when they are a week to two weeks old. Koi, on the other hand, will have oranges, whites, blacks, grays and all sorts of color when they hatch.

Thanks, Shiari.

The fry are gray/olive so, as you said, they must be goldfish.

At the beginning of the season we had three koi and five goldfish. Four goldfish "disappeared" (we suspect seagulls). So now we just have one silvery goldfish, the three original koi (all about 8 inches in length), and three new 3-inch-long koi bought after the fry hatched. I suppose the spawning happened before the other goldfish were eaten.

I read somewhere that koi don't normally start breeding until they are 12 inches. (?)

A pond is such a wonderful addition to the garden. We really enjoy watching our fish and listening to the waterfall. We enjoy the koi in the winter too when we bring them in to a large aquarium in our livingroom (see photo). They actually splash water at us when we pass by to beg for food. They seem very curious and unafraid.

Hi, could be the fry are hybreeds, both koi, and goldfish. This happens by accident, but does happen. Good luck, pondgirl
