koi size for breeding ??? Can't Post

hello

newbi question here :)

i bought 3 new kohaku koi maybe a month back and i already had one in the pond ,that makes 4 kohaku .the good news is 2 are male and 2 are female and they spawned this morning ,my question is what size do they need to be to produce fertile eggs ??

the largest fish is roughly 30 Cm's and the other 3 are around 25-28 cm are they big enough ??

i have collected around 50 eggs so far and i am keeping them in a tank in the hut .
how long till i know if they are fertile ??

and if they hatch will they also be kohaku ??

regards

Mark

Hello, the age is what is important in breeding, but size too is a factor. so you can have a koi that is small because it lived in an aquraium but is also mature and able to breed. The bigger the koi, and this generaly means age, the more eggs it can hold , so more babies! I have not worked with Kohakus, but from what I understand they are the only ones the breed true, what this means is all the fry will be kohakus! and this is not the case with others as they dont breed true. Remember that not all white and orange koi are worthy of being called kohaku!

ok thanks for that :)

that's good news about kohaku fry being the same as the parents ,ive just taken out about another 30 eggs :)

i have taken pics of the fish before but when they were in the pond so the quality wasn't very good ,but i must get them out and photograph them in a blue basin for 2 reasons ,1 is so i can post pics of them on here to see what people think and 2 for my own records e.g sex, size ,age .

thanks again

I hate to throw cold water on things, but unfortunately there is NO variety that really does breed true. In a typical Kohaku spawn as many as 50% can be benigoi. Ogons come closer to breeding true to type than anything else, but even they will throw off some oddballs.
Your Koi are on the small side for spawning, so the eggs will be few in number and small in size compared to mature adults of 50-80cm. Your fry will be very small and likely have a higher mortality rate as a result.
The best news is that you will learn a LOT about Koi if you raise them well, and grow some out. Watching them develop over a prolonged time will educate your eye a great deal, and give you a far greater appreciation for exactly how difficult it is to produce even ONE that is of high quality.
