koi with eggs or simply fat Can't Post

How do you know a koi has eggs? Do their tummy gets large suddenly or slowly? I have a koi before which i believe has eggs when i bought it becoz of the tummy size. Yet it's been 8 months and the tummy is still not proportionate (but it is smaller now than the original state). Are there eggs still? How long will they carry the eggs in their tummy before they release them. I also have some small ones now which suddenly have bulging stomachs around two months already.

I am not sure ,but it may have dropsy. Does the scale lift up and causes the koi to look like a pinecone?

Sorry vv but it looks to be that she is egg impacted and the pic also looks like the scales may be extended, I cant tell real well as this koi may just have ginrin scales making it look that way, if no scales are extended then she is empacted with eggs or has cancer. I would just let her live out her life the way she is now. I can say this that if she produces the chimical that she is ready to spawn and the males start trying to spawn with her they will kill her. If your lucky then you might just have a big spawn and all will end well. Keep your fingers crossed.

How long has she been like this?

Re: [koifishgirl] koi with eggs or simply fat [In reply to] Can't Post

thanks judy. she's been like since april this year when my dad bought her. She looks bulkier before. After a few months, she became thinner (her size now) so i thought that she had laid the eggs and ate them. I also thought that she will slowly become the normal size. She always looks so healthy and one of the bravest in hand feeding. But she remained plump until now. Would you know how long does a koi carry their eggs?

thanks arcinfol. She's a ginrin diamond type. No scales are lift up. Can you explain what is dropsy? can i cure that? How does a fish acquire that?

vv. she is eggs bound and if she trys and spawns it will kill her. Most koi will obsorb there eggs if not spawned but she is not absorbing for some reason.. Please remove her from your pond in the spring when the water starts warming up so the males will not chace her and keep trying to get her to release her eggs, what will happen is they wont leave her alone and will run her to death, not only that but there is a good chance that she has cancer. If she is spawned she will die a couple days later. You can if she is egg impacted take her and have surgery done to remove the eggs and she might be ok. If it is cancer then you will lose her in time.

Ps. Dropsy is cause by internal bacteria that destroys the kidneys.

I guess arcinfol was wrong. If no scales are raised, good news. It's NOT dropsy.Wink
Well,to explain dropsy, it's a disease that koi could get. the symptoms: raised scales, protruding eyes, buldging body...etc. It your fish's case only the body is buldged, so i'm guessing it's absolutely not dropsy.LaughLaughI would say it's either eggs or swim bladder problem. If you're sure it's not eggs, try putting it in salt water. How long has it been like this?

To my knowladge there is nothing you can do about egg empaction. She could also have cancer and not be egg compacted, when you see a koi bloated like this it is one of the two things just about all the time. The only way she can be fixed is surgery for the egg compaction and if it is cancer there is not much you can do. I would not let her spawn as this will for sure kill her.

vv koi do not hold there eggs over the season, in spring when the water temps warm up to 68 degress she will spawn with a male he will bump her from the sides and she will release her eggs. After the spawning season is over she will absorb the eggs and sometimes she cannot do this and she becomes impacted , if you try and spawn this koi it will KILL HER

PLEASE DONT TRY TO SPAWN HERE OK.

oh. how do i prevent this from happening to my other kois (getting impacted)?
how do i make a successful spawning in my pond?
how do i know if they are pregnant?
Don't they just spawn anytime they want to in the pond?

Re: [vv] koi with eggs or simply fat [In reply to] Can't Post

vv egg impaction is something that we have not control over. But if you want to spawn your koi you will be able to tell the females from the males as the female will be full of eggs in the spring. If you have males and females yes they will spawn on there own in the pond so no need to worry.

Now if you want to spawn koi you need to have a large female with two large males or whatever size that you have that are ready and seperate the males form the females for one month and then put the males in with the female and at night while your asleep they will spawn, if you get up early morning and look you may see them spawning. Just make sure that males and females are close to the same size and use two males to one female.Wink

In the spring the males will have a sandpaper fill to the gill covers and long and slinder so just seperate if you dont want them to spawn before you are ready

You can get by with only one male, but they are more aggressive if there is some competition for the prize (typical malesWink), and you improve your odds of getting a higher percentage of fertile eggs. Large females can lay more eggs than typically smaller males can fertilize.
