lost fry and eggs Can't Post

Hi guys,

now into day 7 or so of removing eggs from the pond.

I had some fry hatch (20 or so) within the first 3- 4 days.

Curiously, I noticed them because they were free swimming. From a great article I read, (Link here), this sounds a bit strange because it said that the newly hatched fry spend the first 2 or 3 days of life stuck to the side of the tank by a sticky pad on their heads. I wonder if I could have brought them in with the eggs from a previous spawning that could have haopened whilst I was away the week before.

I now can't find those fry and can only assume that they are dead, hidden in the middle of the weed in the tank or hiding beneath the under gravel filter i put in the tankk having a good feed up!! Any thoughts?

I have attached a picture of the eggs at the moment but can't work out if they are going to hatch or not.

They are clear apart from a very defined white spot....is this right?

cheers all

ray

You mentioned gravel filter, most likely those frys are underneath the gravel filter. They are only needle size creatures so they can squizzed their body in between gravel and seek for comport.newly hatched fry, hide themselves in any place they can.you'll be surprise one day you clean your under gravel filter, you will see a fingerlings inside your filter box.

Wink Thanks for your reply Gabriele, I really do hope those fry are enjoying some shelter below the undergravel filter.

The tank has 2 airstones inside that are being run by seperate pumps and an internal powerfilter. Even with the filter set to slow there is a fair amount of movement in the tank so I reckon I might hide if I was fry size too! Here's hoping.

Any thoughts on those eggs, are they spose to have a small white spot in the middle at 7 days?....is this near the end before hatching???

I am really hoping they'll hatch by the weekend otherwise that will be 10 days from last eggs being taken out of the pond.

From what I have read in this forum they should not be eggs for any longer than about 7 days, but they don't look dead.

What do you think? is it already too late for the eggs to hatch?

Ray B,sad to say that 10 days period is already past due for fertilized eggs to hatch.I I were you I will start collecting those eggs and check your ammonia.Ratten eggs turn the water parameter in bad condition. If you will look closely on those eggs,if theres is a white or opaque white in there that means the eggs are not fertile.fertile eggs are transparent and you will find a black dot inside and thats their eyes. Where are you located? if you are here in states, send me a fedex airbill or ups I will ship some koi eggs to you overnight.free of charge.tomorrow I will prepare for another pair to spawn this weekend. If you are interested I will private e mail you my address.

I'm really sad to hear that it sounds like my eggs may be dead. Would you like to see a pic of them to confirm? (I tried uploading a pick on my original mail nut it did'nt work, but I could send it direct to you)

Thank you so much for the kind offer of some eggs. I would love some. Unfortunatley I am in the UK so I guess this is not possible?

Wink Thanks for all your advice Gabriele. I will certainly be ready for next year.

If I can, I still might try and pick some eggs or fry up. It would be a good bit of practice for next year.

Thanks again

Ray

Hi Ray B,
Remember I told you about frys stucked underneath the gravel filter.Last weekend i did a renovation of my old concrete pond.removed everything including gravel.as soon as i lifted the egg crate, guess what i've found.its moby dick,i called him or her moby dick because i found a solid white with yamabuki liner 8" koi. for sure that koi been there for almost a year coz thats the off spring from last year got stucked underneath the filter.Shocked i will keep that one and watch it grows.imagine, the size of the filter is only 4" in height 5' long and 2.5 wide and that koi grows that much in less than a year inspite of small space.

Hi Gabriele,
I just had a surprise find too. I added some fingerlings to my main pond and was told not to do it afterwards so I fished them out except for one. In my attempt to find the last one, I looked under the folds or pleatings of my liner pond and I was able to find my 8 inch kin ki utsuri that somehow trapped itself!
I thought it was eaten by a bird or killed by disease, but was so happy to find it.

Hi Gabrielle,

me to!!

Unfortuntley, i've lost one of them to the internal power filter already...(even though it is set inside a sponge and on its slowest speed).

He must of found a way in through a small gap the daft fish! Unsure

However, it is all good experience for next year when I am determind to do a better job and be ready for that full moon at the end of May!

I'll keep a close eye on the other baby now and see what happens over the next few weeks.

Cheers Gab

Ray
