need nanny 911 Can't Post

We moved into a house with a Koi pond about 4 yrs ago. We had the filtration system rebuilt and everything has been fine since. Back Flush once a week and all is good. Pond is fairly large 4ft wide by 30ft long by 2 ft deep. In it live 13 nice Koi aged 2-8 yrs old. Grandma comes to visit and reports there are 10 minnows in the main pond. Sure enough there are 1inch babies in there. Next day the family discover 50-100 more in the upper pond which waterfalls into the main pond. The small pond (4ft by 4ft and 2.5ft deep) has a bacterial filter (shredded plastic) and some algae and plants so the babies appear well protected. Question#1. How did the babies get from the large pond to the upper pond? There are no adults in the upper pond and the eggs or the fish would have to pass through the bubble filter and uv filter to get there. Question #2, What do we do with all these friggin fish? Question #3 We have been feeding them crushed up Koi food. Does this work? Question #4, The babies are different sizes. Does this spell trouble? We welcome all suggestions and apologize for our general ignorance. Thanks, Confused First-Time ParentsCrazy

Jaevo,

The fries must have been sucked away to the filter chamber. Good for them.Sly

Maybe you can start to give them a new place to stay or just leave them there
until they get to around 10 cm then you can put them to the main pond.

You can feed them with brine shrimp as a good source of protein.

I would suggest you separate the big one from the smaller one. Either you put
the big one into different chamber or a new place.

cheers

rickytanoto,
Thanks for the reply. Could the frys have survived the trip through the pump?

I believe so since they are so tiny and of course some of them didnot survive.

You get the strong one in your hand right now.

cheers

This would depend on the shape of the impeller. I know some pumps would chop the little babies int nothing Frown, while some have large impellers and openings capable for tiny tiny fish to get through if there were lucky.
