new koi fry Can't Post

Hi

I am new here - but not new to keeping koi. My best fish have bred - and I have taken some fry out of the pond - the eggs hatched over the weekend.

I have given them some powder from the koi food - everything was OK until this afternoon when i noticed a number appear to have bubbles in their digestive tracts and have difficulty stopping themselves floating up to the surface.

Help please

email iandixon25lr@gmail . com

thanksCrazy

Ian Dixon....

One question...can you see the buubles from outside their bodies???

-Make sure your air for the airstone or whatever you're using is not too powerful. super saturation of the air dissolved in water is most likely the cause.Unimpressed

They are only a few days old - and you can see the swim bladders in most the fry. There are about 6 which also have bubbles in their tummies. As their bodies are clear you can see the bubbles. A couple are floating on the surface on their sides, some others are fighting to get down low.

Maybe constipation? I started them on powder from koi food - high protein 35%. But now have bought a fry liquid food.

I must have between one and two hundred fry.

They are all indoors in plastic water bottles each with about three pints in.

Most look healthy - swimming around and eating and growing.

Thanks for your help

this is the first time I have managed quality fry - or maybe I should say fry from mainly quality parents - so I would like to keep as many as possible until I can clearly see colours and quality. right now most are clear, some are slightly orange and some are clear/black. I am hoping for some young kohaku. The best two fish I managed last year were an orange koi and a goldish doitsu - both just plain single colours.

I wish I had seen your post sooner.
Any news on the fry???
Your description of the fry is a bit troubling. On one hand, they should have their swim bladders visible as they first develop, but they should not be floating on their sides... ever. It is possible that you were seeing their egg sac attached to them as this is how they begin life, feeding on the egg sac for the first few days having it still partially attached.
The other thing is the containers. Water bottles with only a few pints of water are going to become ammonia and nitrite loaded very quickly, and I would suspect that is the real reason for so many floaters.

Hi

They just seemed to keep on dying - and none really seemed to be growing. I checked those in my filter system and they had grown greatly. So I have popped them all back in there.

I think the problem may have been that the bigger koi spawned the next day - and that may have caused water quality problems. Last time I put spawning mats in the filter I had hundreds of small koi - this time just dozens?

so I have rather given up.

Also I had hoped that with kohaku parents I would get kohaku young - none are showing any red at all!

Thanks anyway

Ian
