ok..spawning with the real deal this year! Can't Post

Ohhhh I'm so happy...I just had this feeling after cleaning my pond this week..and put out some yarn yesterday...and this morning my husband said hey! LOOK! Ohhhh my gosh they were all spawning on my yarn ropes! Last year I was able to give away all the "non-koi" and purchased more koi...so I know I have the real deal! I even pulled in the ropes and put out another two and guess what..before 3 hours they had spawned again! Anyone in the area want some eggs?lol...I hate to see them eat them..so sad...
Now if I can just remember what I did last year to raise those!

Hello, you can take those ropes out of the water and put them into a seperate tank so they dont get eaten! Or take the koi out and put them somewhere else!

you are in greenville n.c.? that is really close, i am between Wilmington and myrtle beach s.c. my fish have not spawned yet,and you are further north. last year it was may 12 when they spawned. i am not sure she is carrying eggs. any way i am all set if she does. i am building new pond about 5000 gal. i have a lot of babies from last spawn and my old pond is only 1000 gal when it full of water. am worried there is too many in there for that size pond. how are your babies doing? and do you have a lot of them? love to hear from you, betty

hi carla. that sounds more like it, i was wondering how you had a spawn being futher north. it has been beautiful here also, today 85, i just know my female is going to spawn soon if she has eggs. wonder do you know if they spawn more than once a year.? i think she may have absorbed the eggs she had, and am thinking she may produce more eggs and spawn later. does anyone know about this?

It CAN happen, but not usually. Look for changes in weather, sudden changes in water conditions/temperature (like right after a rain) as a trigger for spawning activity. Sometimes if conditions are already crowded they won't spawn.

there was over crowding, but i separated her thinking she might still have eggs. saw a little bit of interested behavior from the male, but it did not last long. still have them separated but thinking nothing is going to happen. its hard to tell if she has eggs because she is sorta fat anyway. besides she might be smart enough to know that across the fence there is a bunch of fish, new pond is not quite ready yet, but i am thinking about putting a few in there anyway. i have read you have to have fish waste to get the filter up and running. but don't want to sacrifice any of my babies, if i put goldfish in there i will never be able to catch them. thanks for the reply. hows your babies doing?
betty

No new babies yet this year, but the weather has been so up and down it's not a surprise. We do have some interesting ones from our last spawn that we're growing out to learn from. I'll post a few pictures the next time we net them out and bowl them.

Hello, about spawning, well, there are some things that seem to still confuse the human!!!! Like WHY questions!!! Some times there is no why! And as I have seen it, there is NO doubt when a Koi is pregnant or not.

hi i was 99% sure she had eggs, and i was about 75% sure she had absorbed them, but in case i was wrong i went ahead and seperated her with the male. assuming she did absorb them, what i would like to know is maybe she will produce more eggs? and spawn later. do you know of this happening? i still have her seperated from the general population. how long does it take to grow eggs? she is a wide bodied female so it is a little bit hard to tell. needless to say i am disapointed. i did not get my new pond ready soon enough, so there was overcrowding. i am just now putting the fish in the new pond ,a few at a time. i would appreciate it if some of you have knowledge of this happening. i have read on the forum that they can spawn more than once a year.?????
