protecting the little ones Can't Post

Hi Everyone Smile

It seems I haven't been paying enough attention to my koi. Last night I discovered not only had my koi spawned again, I had little ones of all sizes swimming around the lilies and mop heads I had in the pond. I am very happy as I thought I had missed out on the spawn this year.

I have never raised anything this small and really unsure what I should do next. I have fry as small as 1/4 " up to a 1.5" . They are all swimming around happily in the shallow part of the pond where the plants are. Should I try and catch them and raise them in a small tank or leave them in the pond ????? Will my big koi eat them ? Lots of them are about an inch long. Would they be safe in my gold fish pond ? Do they ever go in the deep water were they could get sucked into my filter and pump ??

thanks for the help
Keith

Re: [texasproud34] protecting the little ones [In reply to] Can't Post

hi texasproud34

congratulations on being a 'koi parent'!Smile yes, adult kois are known to consume the little ones so it is best to have them removed (that is you can catch them!)

but the question is, do you really want to keep and maintain that many baby kois? you will need a separate tank to nurture and grow them. there is the issue of cost ie. need to buy more food) and the problem of space. are you able to support that many kois when they grow? (and they grow pretty big and fast too!)

these are some of the issues you must grapple with. but for now, you need to have them netted otherwise your pump will suck them into it. a suggestion is you might want to cull 80-90% of your baby kois and keep the nice ones only.

all the best.

cheers

Hi Smile

I do want to keep them till they are big enough to cull (2-4"). The ironic part of all of this is I had decided that since I had missed the spawn that I just bought a LARGE number of fingerlings. I have them in my quartine tank now. The plan was to keep them in there 3-4 weeks then select the best ones for myself and give the rest away. I was able to by direct from the wholesaler so also bought 20 large fantails for my wife. These are in my wife's small pond. After filling up both of these areas I am not sure where to put these new little guys when I catch them.

Will it hurt them if I add salt to my pond ?? I treat my pond with salt once every 4 months. After a week I will do a 10 % water change, then wait 2 weeks and do a 30% water change. I really want to see what the fry can develop into but don't want to jepoardize the health of my other fish either.

Is there anything I should do differently with my big pond till I can catch the little ones ?

Thanks
Keith
