what to do after a spawn Can't Post

Hello everyone!

I know i'm supposed to get rid of unfertilised eggs and all but i have a problem. I did put down a bit a spawning media into the pond and there are eggs there but there are also eggs EVERYWHERE ELSE in the pond. I'm using a temporary pond so my koi are in an inflatable pool but the floor of the pool is white (kinda hard picking out unfertilised eggs when those eggs are white as well). There are eggs on the floor of the pool, stuck to the filter, venturi, filter itself, pump...

so my question is, aside from going snorkelling in the pool, how can i clean up the unfertilised eggs??? oh yeah, the pool is 12 feet in diameter btw.

Thanks for any suggestions!!!

MOve the parents to the main pond and leave the eggs alone in the tank dont disturb them, just let nature take it course. In about 5 days you should have fryWink Get you plenty of tanks set up to move the fry as they grow and also get some brine shrimp eggs to start hatching the day after the eggs hatch so they will have something to eat.

You need to get some pools going of green water, set some pools up in the sun and put some ferterlizer in the water so the water can turn green and when this happen pump some of this water over into the fry tank, there is lots of live food for fry in green water , it will also help them if you have plenty of live plants in the pool with them as they can eat off the plants.
Keep a close eye on water quality and if you can get the water good and green that will help with ammonia.

I have not used the stuff, but I am sure it is good to use but I dont know how much and just when to use it. You have to be very careful with that stuff or you can kill the whole batch of eggs. Pm. ktg1223 or aka Keifer and he can tell you just how to use it and when, he does spawns at home every spring and feeds for a while before he takes them and puts them in the mud ponds.

Re: [koifishgirl] what to do after a spawn [In reply to] Can't Post

I didn't use malachite green. Anyway I went into the pond and looked at the ropes and I can see little eyes :D Amazingly my fish haven't eaten the eggs that are on the floor so I had to suck them out. The rope is situated right under my homemade bakki shower so I'm guessing there's a lot of oxygen there.

I'm hoping that they will hatch either tomorrow or the following day. I'm not worried about the fry getting sucked into the filter but I am worried that I won't find the fry in a 1000 something gal pond and feed them properly.

The adults are still in the pool because it's either they stay there or I transfer them back into the aquarium. The aquarium contains 2 angelfish, 2 plecos and 1 goldfish which has lesions on its tail but otherwise is healthy. I'm just worried about that goldfish transmitting something to my koi if I empty out the aquarium and put the fry in there so I'm in a tight spot as to what to do with the eggs that are developing.

Suggestions?

Thanks koifishgirl!!

If you have the space I would get a kiddie pool (itty bitty one) with an airstone and move the spawning ropes to it for them to hatch. Use water from your pond to fill the pool (after cleaning it good) and don't filter the water. Just let it go green so the fry will have green water to feed on. Start there and keep us posted on your progress.

THanks larz1! I will be doing that tomorrow morning.

I have a question though. I've read in these forums that the koi eggs are supposed to grow while the fry inside them develop? Well the koi eggs I have have the eyes but the eggs look the same size to me. The female koi was a metallic tancho and the males were a sanke and a hariwake. All koi were approx 2 yrs old and about 1 foot in length.

The eggs are 3 or 4 days old today.

They will probably start hatching within 24hrs. IF the eggs grow it will be hard to detect. The only real difference I've noticed is between fertile (grey) and infertile (white). When they become fertile they swell a bit, but after that not much discernable difference unless you want to use a microscope. The parent koi are young, so your eggs are likely on the small side anyway.

I tried looking for the eggs with eyes that I saw yesterday and I couldn't find them!!! The fry are either floating around in the pool or lost somewhere... oh well I'll just wait til next season... :(

Some may have been eatenFrown, but it is also possible that many have hatchedShocked. 4 days is all it takes and in a large pool they'll be nearly impossible to see at first. Give it a little time and you might begin seeing some here and there.

Thanks for the advice larz1!! All I have to do now is hope that even 1 survives!!!
I'm integrating a breeding/nursery tank in my pond construction, do you think this is a good idea? the clean water will go into the nursery/veggie filter first and then overflow into the main pond. I'll probably incorporate a bypass straight into the main pond.

If I had planned better that's exactly what I would have doneWink. Now I'm remodeling mine to do exactly that, and having the bypass is a good idea. That way your fry can hatch and grow while it is on bypass without you having to worry about them getting swept away by the currentCool.

I'm heaving trouble catching my koi with a handheld net... i slipped while chasing them around in the pool. I need to take a good look at them because i've noticed them flashing how do you catch your koi in the pond? i'm thinking of buying one of those big nets that koi breeders use in their mud ponds so i can just lift the net up and catch the fish.

The koi have been in their temporary home for two weeks i think and they still won't come near me when i feed them whereas when they were in the aquarium they would greet me!! Is it because the floor of the pool is white? is that why they're always hanging around the edge where it's sheltered?

They don't like change, so the fact that they have been recently moved to such a different environment probably has them spooked. They aren't in their "comfort zone" yet. Koi roundups with a net quickly become Koi Rodeos (at least they do in my pond) so I can sympathizeUnsure. A seine net is probably a good plan for the future.
As to the flashing, have you tested the water? ph or any type of ammonia/nitrite/nitrate problem can cause them to flash. You may be able to settle them down with a light salting, but test the water first.

Re: [larz1] what to do after a spawn [In reply to] Can't Post

oh ok I was starting to worry.

I can understand the ammonia spike because of the recent spawning and i've done a 50% water change yesterday. I would like to look at them to see if they have any parasites on them just in case but my aquarium has never had parasite infestation and the pool is brand new. You guys think that there could be a possiblility of parasites? no fish introduced ever since 1 yr and a half ago. The pool is located on our covered patio.

The water smells less fishy than it did last week.

Re: [canuckpuck] what to do after a spawn [In reply to] Can't Post

Spawning and decaying eggs (unfertilized) jack up ammonia levels pretty easily, so the water change was probably a very good thing. Since you havn't added anthing new to your pond parasites aren't all that likely. Check out your water parameters closely to see what you've got and let us know your results.

Good news! my koi aren't flashing anymore and the water's crystal! I'm still hoping to see a new baby fish swimming around in the coming months though :)
