which ones to cull? Long sorry Can't Post

Hi! I'm new, and sorta have a problem. Everyone says that koi and goldfish eat their eggs/young but I don't think mine got the memo because there are soooooooooo many (we're talking like 70) that survived to about 1" ...i.e. too big to eat now....they are now feeding with the big ones! I'm confused on which ones to get rid of....there are soo many that are white with orange on them (will this ever turn red??) ....I have a koi that is about 2 feet long that is white and orange not red, he might be the dad. Anyway, there are a lot that are pond brown color but I've seen where you guys say they change so much so I don't know what to do. Also there are a lot of just plain white ones. There are 3 that I want to definitely keep , two are blue and black, verrry pretty and one is the brightest black with the brightest yellow head I've ever seen - he is my fave , there are others yellow/black but he seems truly unique- is this a mistake? My family just got a pond last year so I cant say I have the highest quality koi , they are from a local hobbyist he says they are "venezuelan" ( is this bad? ) Anyway, the questions are :

1) Is it worth it to keep a nicely patterned orange/white in hopes it will turn red?
2) keep any of the white ones?
3) How to catch them they are so fast!!!
4) Do you agree with the colors I want to keep?

Thank you soooo much! I will try to post some pics this week, I know this is hard to do without it. Also, my pond is very large so it can handle new ones.

The value of "non-show" koi is in the eye of the owner, so unless you are planning to go through the hassle of competition don't worry about anything except what YOU like.Smile
At this age they are only beginning to show their true colors so the only culling you should concern yourself with is physical defects. A good guide for spotting them can be found at:
http://australiankoiassoc.bizland.com/Culling2.chtml
Koi netting is LOTS of fun so make sure you've got plenty of time (it took my wife and I several hours to catch 150 babies last week)
Once that is taken care of you can watch the healthy ones develop further and learn about their names and relative value in the marketplace. It might surprise you to know that Black/Yellow combinations are relatively rare, but you'll have to let them get up to at least 3"-4" before you can tell anything.
My favorite places to learn about koi identification are:
http://www.cnykoi.com/koiid/main.asp
and:
http://www.koi.com/reference/encyclopedia/

Once they grow to that size you'll have a better picture of which to keep for your own pleasure and which to adopt out or possibly even sell a few if they are properly colored and marked wellWink.
Happy Parenting!Cool
