3 stage filter for Hatem. Comments anyone? Can't Post

This is a very simple 3 stage filter consisting of a long settlement chamber followed by a long bio filter and then finally to a vege filter I propose for our forum member from Jordan, Hatem, who has a HUGE pond (without filtration at the moment).

Because he would like not to have to touch the exisiting pond, I'm proposing a pump fed filter built outside his pond that may double up as a raised viewing platform or seating.

Comments from the floor?

Note: Just wondering if Japanese brushes and Jap mats/bioballs are available in Jordan? If not, you could probably substitute Brushes with a couple of layers of nylon fishing nets and bioballs with alot of plastic haircurlers.

cheers.SmileCool

Great drawing, Kev...Angelic. Yes, simple and good. As usual, anything good will attract a few comments...Sly. A long settlement chamber, which is a good idea and affordable in terms of space as in this case may require more than one drainpipe, maybe two. Since the filter inlet is pump-fed, the force of water entering settlement chamber may stir-up the debris. Maybe it's a good idea to incorporate a few concrete partitions with holes to slow down the water before it reaches the brushes. Therefore house the partitions in a common chamber and have a drain for this chamber too. The bio-chamber should be as long as possible or divided into a few chambers for easier management. It would be best if Hatem could get hold of some mattings and arrange them vertically with gaps in between (the usual way). If not, may have to make use of bioballs or plastic hair-curlers...Crazy. The next chamber is for placing pH buffers like shells or even a small capacity pump to feed a venturi. The excess water over flows out via the lip as a waterfall. What about the veggie filter? The hydroponics may be placed together in a common long smaller waterway measuring abt 2ft width x 2ft depth with 2in drains. at regular intervals for the purpose of cleaning. This waterway must be situated before the pump and waterfall of course. As mentioned, there should be two such filtration systems for this large pond, on either end. One last suggestion, wouldn't it be better to have a stong external pump to supply water to filter as maintenance of such a pump in the even of blockage will be easier? Can Hatem tell us where the bottom drain is situated and whether it is working well? Smile

I believe he said he had ONE bottom drain, and I suspect he uses the bottom drain to irrigate his system. That said, it might be cumbersome to try and re route the bottom drain into a gravity fed chamber. (Plus the fact he said he didn't want to do anything on his exisiting pond.)

Yup, agreed. I think he might need a couple of walls or something to give some friction to the water coming in from the inlet pipe from the pump into the settlement chamber. Oh yes, and he can have as many drainpipes as he pleases (but just as a caution, the joint between the concrete and the pvc plastic is where there's a likelihood for leakage, and as such I'd recommend fewer standpipes but just bigger diameter pipes instead.).

Gee, maybe venturis aren't necessary for his pond because the surface area to volume ratio is so huge already. Big enough surface area for gaseous transfer. Plus I'm now a proponent of using fewer pumps and more efficient pumps. The running cost of pumps can be quite astronomical for big ponds like this in the long run.

The Vege filter can be of any size and placed anywhere after the bio filter. (U could have a narrow waterway running around your pond with water marginals in it, but u do have to do quite a bit of maintenence to cut away dead/dying leaves b4 they rot in the water.).

Waterfalls?? Geez, frankly I wouldn't suggest that in Jordan simply because of its hot and dry/arid climate. With a waterfall running 24/7 u'll be getting alot of evaporative cooling (and I'm sure u'll hve a cool house if it's near to the pond), but with that kind of huge surface area of his current pond, he's already getting alot of evaporative cooling! If you add a waterfall to that, all that will do is make him replace a whole lot more water because of more evaporation from the waterfalls. Errr.... and I do think water is a little more precious in that part of the world. Wink

External pumps. Hmm, that sounds like a good idea if he can get a reliable one. Otherwise, just make sure you have a spare pump on standby at all times. If you have 2 filters and run it on different pumps, u might get away with one functioning filter till you can get the other fixed. I think it's more critical for us who have only 1 filter and 1 pump. Unsure

What I'd really like to see is a couple of pictures of this pond we're talking about. That could help in the design.

Hi Kevkoi, thanks for the response. Would like to clarify two things. When I mentioned venturi, besides additional oxygenation, I also had water surface circulation in mind. This would circulate water around the pond and prevent pockets of stagnant water which may encourage bad bugs to thrive. Besides that, the koi may love it as it creates some horizontal water currents for them to swim against and hence provide some exercise...Tongue. Next is the waterfalls. No I am not referring to those gigantic ones that Chingbee has at Boracay....CrazyLaugh. More like the 1ft wide x 1ft high type that you had drawn pouring out from the lip of the veggie compartment. These would provide some good vertical water currents for water circulation and lots of bubbles for oxygenation! The koi will love them too!.....Sly. Common.....you don't wanna have a pond that is too still and quiet would you?.....Crazy. Cheers and once again, good job! Sly

Haven't heard too much more from him. I'm wondering too...
