A Picture of My New Pond Can't Post

My wife and I built a new pond over the winter and I'd like a little feedback on our design.
It is a 2,000 gallon round pool with a 2,000gph pump feeding a home-built upflow bio-filter (mats and lava rock). The filter is submerged in a barrel topped off with water hyacinth for additional filtration with the water spilling over into a 50' long stream lined with river rock and pea gravel with 2 catch pools which also have floating plants for additional filtration. The stream feeds into the east end of the pond which also has a 1,000gph waterfall on the west side with a seperate pump which uses a simple mat filter. The pond has a variety of water lillies, hyacinth, papyrus, celery, etc... for cover and added bog filtration. The attached picture doesn't do it justice, but it is the only one I have available at the moment.
We have 10 adult fish ranging from 7-16 inches and for the moment several hundred babies in the 2-5 inch range. (we'll be adopting them out soon, before they get too large for the pond to handle). We've been talking about adding an 800-1,000 gallon pool in the middle of the stream (just downstream of the foot-bridge) to use as a hatchery sometime next winter. A little advice from a few people with more experience would be appreciated.

hey beautiful pond! your stream must sound beautiful! it also looks great! you probably have a lot of bio-filtration in your stream. how many gph do you lose going up that hill? do you have an external pump to help boost the water up the hill?
Thanks Marshall

Hi Larz1,

What a lovely pond you have thereCool. Looking very natural except for the guy sitting on the west side of the pondTongueLaugh.

My only concern is your filter. They don't sound big enough,IMHO. You might want to add another barel for settlement. And also replace your stream filter with another barel. Apart from that, its a very nice pond (except for the guy having coffeeLaugh)

Jon

PS: If you want to post the pix inline, check out the HELP section (bottom of main page). I posted the instructions thereSmile

I havn't done a careful flowcheck on the pump to the top of the stream yet. I'm still tweaking a few things here and there but I'll do a rough check tomorrow and let you know what I come up with. It really isn't as steep as it looks, but the slope of the lawn creates a bit of an optical illusion that makes it look like more than it is. You are definitely right about the sound. Between the small waterfall in the pond and the stream I can hear the water in stereo from 50'+.

Yeah, the goofy guy under the pergola drinks way too much coffee, but his wife doesn't let him out in public very oftenCrazy. The added filtration from the stream and catch pools was making up for the small filter, until we had the babies... Just like humans, all they do is eat, poop, and grow. I'm probably going to put a filter similar to your design on the waterfall to make up the difference.

I finally got that flowcheck done on my stream-bed. I'm losing about 1/2 the pump volume to head pressure. No boosters, just a magnetic drive 2,000 gph.

Well, I added the extra filter to the waterfallSly. 4 mats + 2 cubic feet of lava rock and an aerator. It is working well already and once the microbes get established in the lava rock it will kick serious buttCool

The only new ones I have of the pond are in transit. (my #@&!! computer doesn't like kodak software).Mad I have a few of my babies I'll be posting soon. They're in the pond so the detail on them isn't as good as it would be in a nice holding tank.

Thank you so much for your kind words and the inline postCool. I use Opera for my main browser (msie is so painfully slow by comparison), but there are a few bugs they need to work outTongue and inline posting seems to be one of them.

Re: [Koi38] A Picture of My New Pond [In reply to] Can't Post

That link is the one I went to for reference. I think the problem must be that my browser doesn't load the textbox options across the top of the page as shown in your excellent example. None of the wordpad style menu items (text, bullets, font, picture frame, etc...) even appear on my screen. Everything else is there so it must be that part that is gumming up the works on my end. I'm switching from dialup to dsl next week, so I guess I'll use msie then as it will be 20x faster than the 56k connection I have nowCool.

I'm still looking for some ideas from those of you with more experience about our thought of adding an 800-1,000 gallon pool in the middle of the stream (just downstream of the foot-bridge) to use as a hatchery sometime this coming fall/winter.
There are a lot of people around here with more experience than me (almost everyone) and I'm not the sort who thinks the only good ideas are the ones I come up withTongue
