This is my modified water circulation pipe with air bubbles.

Here is a picture of my young kois. Water is clear despite heavy rain yesterday and today.

Re: [chriswu3311] Another Shallow Pond [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Chris,

My pond is relatively small compared to most ponds - under 7,000 Litres for the main pond. My pump can do 12,000L/hr and so my pond water turnaround is fast - IMHO. I am currently only running 1 pump and have a spare pump of the same capacity waiting. The second pump is connected to the wall, not very clear in the picture, for water-overflow feature - which is not running (ie it runs only when visitors come Smile)for 2 reasons. (1) I haven't resolved a minor water leakage within the feature (2) I need to think of how to make use of the extra pump pressure as the feature requires only a small amount of water - I am a bit worried the pump choke.

So, that could possibly explain why the water is clean, and my kois are still young.

The water clarity is primary due to my UV still running 24x7 - IMHO. As Vince suggested....I am incline to leave the UV running for a long time.Smile

Re: [chriswu3311] Another Shallow Pond [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Chris,

My pond design layout came from ThiamHwa, with a proposal to relocate two manholes to enable a deeper pond. I didn't take his recommendation, Tongue for better or worst. Sorry, Thiamhwa! However, I would like to take this opportunity to thank ThiamHwa for his effort for the design below as it became the blue-print for the contractor to build my pond. I would have been pretty lost without his input and his drawings is superb! Chris, if you need to re-design your pond, you know who to ask.....Tongue

The design is still very accurate except for the following:
(1) Manholes relocation were not done. This has restricted my pond's depth to be only 2.5'
(2) I didn't have a dry-chamber.
(3) 1st Chamber has a valve control pipe to the left-hand side manhole. This valve is closed during normal operation and is used only to drain all the water from 1st Chamber.
(4) I have a valve-control pipe from 2nd Chamber to 1st Chamber. This valve is close during normal operation and is used only if I want to wash the 2nd and the 3rd chambers.
(5) I also have a valve-control pipe from 4th Chamber to 1st Chamber. This valve is close during normal operation and is used only if I want to wash the 4th chamber.
(6) I have two valves in the 1st chamber to close off the 2 bottom drains if I want to wash my chambers. These two valves are open during normal operations.
(7) I only have 3 out of the 4 outlets for the water-circulation pipes. The 4th outlet (ie the bottom left hand corner) was ommitted because of the contracter's fault! Frown
(8) I also have a surface skimmer connecting from the main-pond to the 1st chamber.
(9) I also provisioned an air-pipe along the side-wall along the bottom side of the pond. ie near the house. However, I have disconnected my air-pump after I have modified my three air-water circulation outlets to generate air bubbles. Trying to save some electricity!Wink

As for my filter system,

(A) I have brushes in the 1st Chamber, corals in 2nd and 3rd chambers, and 2 pumps in 4th Chambers.
(B) I also cover the top of 1st, 2nd and 3rd Chambers with J-Matt.
(C) Finally, a submerged 20W-UV in the 4th Chamber.

Please comment.

Wow!!!! i can see yr pond structure in the plan very clear...Smile
Sure i know who to ask if i going to re-design my pond at future kekekeke....
But dont know whether he will help or not...hahaha

As i read yr input there u hav only Brushes-corals-corals in yr filter chamber and it works well.
But me....hmmmmmmFrown I m doing all the best tat i afford to do for my pond, and the respond is green water still bothering me for a long long time.
Any way i m enjoying to this hobby bcos still many 'kaki' & sifu here to support and giv a lot advise...
Just one thing, i m not good in English if any thing i m saying wrong and pls correct me... Blush

Hi Chris,

I think your green-water problem can be solved with the UV. Gives it time and let the UV does the job!

As for my pond, it is only 2 months old. I hope the water clarity, cleanliness and quality are maintained throughout - so that I can enjoy my koi everyday! Smile

Re: [Epal63] Another Shallow Pond [In reply to] Can't Post

I think i need more patience to observe more time on my pond....
For my thought i will still take away the uv light few weeks after the water turn clear.
Coz as i know if the filter system is good or mature, it could b control the green water as well.
Except we r doing some thing wrong to the pond like over feeding, wash the bio media with tap water and etc....
Last time my pond water turn green was cause by over feeding (i think)....
Tat why my kois grow very fast, even some kois hav muscle on it back....kekeke...
will take some close up shoot to show u then...
Any way i wish u and me good luck.. and green water never come to us....Tongue

Hi Epal68,

I review to yr pond pics tat about the bubbles on the surface.
Ya, tat was some bubbles there coz u hav injet air from the out let...

Before i built my pond i m thinking to put a air plate at the center of my pond, end up i dint.
Bcos at tat time if i place an air plate at the center of my pond, sure i cant see the fish at all. Except turn of the air pump...
2nd i knew tat would hav a lot bubbles on the surface. (but i dont know tat is protein)...

I think if yr surface skimmer is place at the right place, sure it will solve the problem. Do u hav a surface skimmer in yr pond?

Hi Chris,

Yes, I have a surface skimmer. It is also my manual PS! Wink. I agree with you about the using air pump will result in too much bubbles in my pond.

I have also turned off my airpump now because of that and in addition to saving electricity. I am even considering selling off my air-pump (HiBlow 80 - oversize for my pond). It is still new!Laugh

Why dont u left it as a spare pump or install a timer on it,
then only turn on at night to morning...bcos DO could b low at mid night.
So tat the bubbles wont disturb u to viewing yr nice kois at day time... Wink tat just my suggestion..

Re: [chriswu3311] Another Shallow Pond [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your suggestion. Currently, the bubbles are quite minimal in my pond without the airpump on. My surface skimmer collects lots of bubbles (foams actually) which I clean it daily - less than 5mins work. As mentioned in the DIY thread, I will post some pictures soon on my suface skimmer to show how it is trapping the bubbles.

Appreciate if other cifus can comment too.

Thanks!

Hi Danny,

I have never measured the height of the feature wall but it's definitely less than 6' from the filter's wood level. I think round 5'.

The fund is ready ( of course from staff loan) & my long time contractor waiting for the final instruction.

just need u favour to fwrd the design pond drawed by sifu Tiamhwa ( can't get clearer copy from the site) & will make appointment with abngK for further advice
