Concealed Trickle Tower Can't Post

Here's a picture of my trickle towers concealed inside a tall terracotta pot/vase. The terracotta pot in the front conceals a 15inch diameter PVC pipe filled with bio-bals on the inside. on the top of this 5ft long PVC pipe there is a plastic disc drilled with many tiny holes so that the water is distributed evenly over the filtermedia.

The clay urn in the back also contains bioballs. The top of the clay ur is also a white plastic disc drilled with many tiny holes to distribute the water evenly. The plastic disc inturn is concealed from view by putting some smooth river rocks over it to make the whole thing look 'natural'.

The second picture shows how the whole TT setup is concealed.... quite nicely. (No need to show all the 'engineering and plumbing'.)

cheers.

Here is the building detail drawings for construction of the concealed trickle tower seen above.

The TT has been running for about a year and has been quite succesful.

cheers.

hi kevkoi,

just dropping in a small question ...

as i understand it, one of the principles of trickle tower operation is the interaction of air and water as it trickle down over the media. In yr case of the vase, will maximum air and water interaction be obtained? This has been my concern as i observed in other sites, majority of their trickle tower seem to be sorta 'open-aired'.

Yr thoughts on this will be much appreciated.

Cheers.

Probably not the maximum air/water interaction, but there are still lots of air gaps and spaces for this to happen. It still works far better than the submerged filter.Wink

If you're looking for the MAX air/water interaction, I've seen a trickle tower at Zen Koi in Penang where the water drips down a series of stainless steel baskets filled with bio balls. I'm sure that works fantastically well..... but aesthetically it doesn't look too good. Frown

TQ for yr comments. I suppose the other principles of height, media and flowrate in yr trickle tower is working great.

Now my trickle tower is a smaller version of yours and somehow i feel it is not working to perfection. What do u think, in the setup of yours, if we were to try to make it a two to three levels. Taking into consideration the drawing of yours, we create another 2 or 3 rubber mats in-between the bio-balls leaving gaps/space in between them.

Do u think this will improve the filteration and make the intervention worthwhile.

Yr comment is much apreciated.

cheeers.

Hmm, I don't know. How are you going to keep the rubber mats suspended in mid space? The reason I use rubber mats is because I can bend and fold them and squeeze them into the small mouth of the vase. Might help if you drill some small holes on the vase to allow more air to go in.... That said, it's risky to put a drill to a terracotta vase. Might crack.

Hi,

Use a dimond tipped drill bit and you shouldn;t have any problems. It may be worth putting some tape over the area you are going to drill as well, this prevents cracking (works like the old pin in the ballon without bursting trick).

i understand the use of the rubber mats for ease to squeeze in to the vase which was a good original idea.

anyway, thanks for all the comments. It is back to the drawing boards to evaluate if it will increase the filteration process signicantly to warrant further adjustments.

Thks.

Good luck..... and if you get any smart ideas, please share around hor taikor. Wink Would like to know how to increase the efficiency of the TT. I dun know exactly if my TT is the one lowering the nitrates substantially or my vege filter. I have both running simultaneously. Crazy
