Conv. Pool Pond and Patio Pond Can't Post

Here's some photos of our larger of two ponds.

It is a converted 5,000 gallon in-ground swimming pool. The pond is in its second season. When we decided to get rid of our pool, converting it into a pond was actually the furthest thing in our mind. We figured it would be way too expensive and we had not a clue how to go about it. In reality, the conversion was only about $2,400 and filling it with dirt and covering it with cement was going to be $3,000+.

Photo 1 is the before picture. While we were filling the pool with sand.

Photo 2 is the one year later "after" photo from the deck we built over 1/4 of the pond to provide shade.

The water isn't clear as we were in it moving stuff around and added a charcoal sock to the waterfall filter.

Re: [bbatesokc] Conv. Pool Pond and Patio Pond [In reply to] Can't Post

Our other pond is a small patio pond.

Until last year it was one of those store bought plastic ponds but we grew tired of it and converted it to a liner pond.

All but one of the fish are hiding in a cave I built to give them shelter.

We have plans to add a waterfall and more plants this year.

The pond has 3 small butterfly Koi, a gold fish, 2 crabs, 2 crayfish, 2 huge tad poles and three tiny red-eared slider turtles.

We love to sit and watch all the animals.

You started with a 5000 gallon pool. What did your final volume end up being on the pond? Perhaps it's perspective, but the pond looks much smaller.

Very nicely landscaped btw.

The final volume is about 2,000 gallons. Roughly 11' long by 6' wide by 3.5' deep + the volume in the tubes, waterfall filter and waterfall/stream.

We intentionally gave up some volume because it was our first try at a larger than patio pond. We also wanted room for lots of landscaping.

Another consideration was cost for filtration, pumps etc. Seemed to be a big price jump for ponds above 2,000 gallons.

We are thinking of going bigger. If we do, we will build a temporary above ground pond in the yard, move the fish and reclaim the pool area and use the existing stone (plus probably another truck load).

Thanks for the complement on the landscaping. For our first try we really like it. 90% of the plants are perennials to keep the cost down from season to season.
