Koi Pond - Can mix ?? Can't Post

I am building a new pond for a friend want to find out the following informationn. Apreciate your kind reply .

1) She has some small koi - local approx 7 inches length and really likes them . We have been warned that if and and when the small koi spawn the whgolw pond will become smelly and a really big job of draining the pond will follow . We are planning to buy some bgger koi in time to mix with the smaller koi 's . Will this fouling really happen ?? The alternative is to give away the small koi that she has been keeping for the last 3 years and is not going to make her happy as she wanted to build the pond for them .

2) In case of power failure what is the best option for alternative power supply for aeration in the pond ??

3) Is 3 ft depth too shallow for KOI - MAYBE JUMBO in future ??

4) How do you determine how much oxygen is required for a pond or fish ??

Thanks

CHRIS

Do not get rid of the small koi.The fouling will not happen as you say. Yes it is sometimes smelly but any gunk from this can be cleared out using a net after the spawning season. It is also unlikely that the koi will spawn straight away as a change in their environment e.g. new pond may stress them it may take a few seasons for them to establish. Its not advisable to completely drain your pond at any time unless there is something seriously wrong.
In terms of aeration it depends on how you are planning to build the pond. Any waterfalls or surface agitation where bubbles can be seen add oxygen into your pond.
3 foot is deep enough for koi however many ppl on this forum recommend deeper- you will certainly need a deeper pond if u want jumbo koi.

If you tell us more about ur proposed pond plan and the filter set up in particular we will be able to help you further
Cheers

I got a little piece of advice as for emergency power in case it is needed.
I seen some neat battery backup aerators, they basically have a built in rechargeable battery and when power loss is detected they automatically kick in. I actually don't have one of those, I was tempted to buy one but then I thought, what happens to my biological filter? if there is no water motion the precious beneficial bacteria is lost after a while, so what I ended up doing is I bought a small power generator, it is a portable one (Coleman Powermate 1850W), a pretty neat little gen. It runs for around 7 hours on 1 gallon of fuel, it already save my pond filtration system once and since it is portable it gets other uses (tailgating, camping, beach parties etc).

Hi BajaJoe

Will it kick in automatically when there is power trip?

or u have to do it manually?

TIA

Norazli,
It is manual.
I wouldn't be a bad idea to have one of this . It is basically a very efficient pump with a water circulation capacity of between 100 to 3000GPH.
If you scroll down to towards the bottom of the link you will see that a battery backup is available and it would run the pump for around 30hrs automatically in the event of a power failure.

Hello, I feel as though you are worrying about the wrong thing! POWER FAILER, in most places this will not last for too long, so I dont think it is that important, unless you live in an area where you loss power for hours at a time / all the time!! Have constant power is because you have a bio filter /trickle tower and these need to have CONSTANT RUNNING WATER to maintaine the good bacterial colony! And even then the bacteria can live for a couple of hours ( 2 or 3).
So the first thing I would do is check into filter systems! This controlles the ODORS that could come from water! And smelly water is not a good sign!
The heart of the pond and those who depend on it , is related to filtration! Good filtration means Healthy koi and a nice EASY to maintain pond! Once you figure the filtration out, everything else is somewhat easier! So before you start thinking about JUMBO KOI, you MUST get past this first step FILTRATION!!!

Hi

Sometimes it is not because of mechanical power failure but due to strong thunderstorm triggered the PCB.

If this happen, it will be off until someone is back at home. Imagine during long breaks, etc.....

May not be critical for those rearing in FB I think (can get air pump with backup battery) but maybe more for those with pond.

Rgds
