MY SHALLOW POND Can't Post

Welcome to my Shallow Pond..

Constructed in May 2007 with the size of 30' x 5' x 2' deep. The depth was too shallow as I came into this forum just after the floor was heavily concreted and cannot be modified. Therefore the bottom drainage system was also unable to be done.

However with the comments, recommendations and guides from many Koi Sifus of this great forum, the pond was constructed with the following system:
1. One way flow of the water towards the filtration chamber - to ensure that the debris can be carried away by the flow into the Settlement chamber.
2. Using the Skippy Filtration system - cheap and very effective.
3. 13,000L/hr pump - to pump out the water from the filtration into the waterfall pot and to 4 side outlets of water jet.

The above system is working very well and managed to clean the pond's floor continuously and treating the water to crystal clear with accurate water parameters and without any experience of algae problem ever since the final water topup. Cool

The main attraction..

This is the Skippy Filtration System:
1. Bundles of kitchen scrub pads.
2. Air pump to supply oxygen.

Hi Dannysao,

Before the Sifu provide you the detail advise, there are 2 ways to build the pond:
1) Get an experience contractor
2) Manage on your own by getting 2-3 Indo workers.

I built my pond with option no.2. It is much cheaper but you need to be around most of the time to monitor the job.

First of all go for a minimum of 3' depth. 13x5x3 is much better. However the 13ft will become 10ft left as 3'x5' required for the filtration chamber. You may need to use "One way water flow system" as the pond size is limited to have a Dry chamber, let see what the Sifus have to comment on this.

Get the drawing accurate and post it here for others to comment.

Estimate for option 2 (DIY) inclusive:
1. Excavation cost - 100
2. Pipings - 100
3. Floor concrete - 950
4. Wall bricks - 200
5. Wiring - 20
6. Plastering - 400
7. Grout - 50
8. Tiles - 600
9. Labour cost - 3150 (Estimate 70 x 3men x 15days)
(Pond construction - 5550)

10. Pump - 550
11. Brushes - 200
12. Jap mat - 120
13. Scrub pads, if you prefer "Skippy" BH - 300
14. Air pump - 150
15. Corals - 10
(Equipment - 1330)

Estimate total: 6880

This is good, at least now I have a baseline for the fish pond cost estimate.
I will try to take the measurement and pic and post it here for comment.

Abg K, Lovely pond. I envy you. I'm planning to build my own too. Got few question

1. How many bags of cement for the whole pond ?
2. Did u use BRC wire mesh for the pond floor ?
3. Any additive to add to water proof the cement ?
4. Did u use epoxy paint for the pond surface ? If yes what brand ?
5. Did you tile the inside wall to the bottom of the pond ?
6. Did u use acrylic/perspex lips for the waterfall ?

Thats all for now. More to come Laugh

Re: [gogsard] MY SHALLOW POND [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks Gogsard,

Please again be informed that I am not a contractor but capable enough to build my pond successfully.. All the mixture and the requirements of the goods were done by my worker and I took him to the hardware shop to purchase accordingly.

1. How many bags of cement for the whole pond ?
** Based on size, as for my pond I really can't recalled as I kept buying as an when required. Perhaps around 30 bagsCrazy..

2. Did u use BRC wire mesh for the pond floor ?
** This one is for sure as my ground is very soft.

3. Any additive to add to water proof the cement ?
** Yes please refer the above grout - its like a black grease used for bathroom.

4. Did u use epoxy paint for the pond surface ? If yes what brand ?
** No

5. Did you tile the inside wall to the bottom of the pond ?
** Yes all around and the floor with black tiles.

6. Did u use acrylic/perspex lips for the waterfall ?
** No, just used the tile too.
Cool...

Best regards
Abangk

As it is just for the pond, I used the factory rejected tiles "Class II" which is around RM1.30 - RM1.80 per piece 1'x1'. Cool

Really got to hunt for it, sometimes they put up a small ads on the road side and sometimes its sold at the used construction goods stores. The quantity and the colour of the tiles are depends on the availability and our luck too. The normal new tiles is around RM2.30-2.80 per piece for 1'x1'.

Re: [asuntha] MY SHALLOW POND [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Asuntha

You can get it at any building construction hardware shops around your area and ask for the bathroom waterproofing, there are 2 types, white liquid that they use to call it "susu" and black tar type.

The susu is to be mixed with the cement for plastering of the internal area of the pond, I think its turn into rubberise once dry.

The black tar is to be applied after plastering of the internal area of the pond but the area must be totally dry else it will not properly stick to it.

You can choose either one of the above and finally it has to be covered with fine cement or tiles.

Sifu... please correct me if I am wrong.. TQ

Best regards

I also built my own pond personally. I used water-proofing brand named Durabond which can easily be found in any hardware shop. It come with a bag of cement and milky liquid which you mix together (follow the instruction on ratio) and apply with paint brush over the surface 2-3 layers. Then I plaster a thin layer of cement at the last, I didn't need to apply the black coating like abangk. So far so good, already 7 months in used.
