Re: [weaselphd] My First Pond [In reply to] Can't Post

First I would like to address the issue of filtration
As you would know after reading up on koi, they can generate a lot of waste from pooing and peeing. What current or proposed filtration is currently running in the pond?

Pond depth
What is the depth of the pond?

I observe in the winter photo that the pond doesn't seem very deep.

Ideally, because of predators that may come and visit, and reducing the chances of thermal variation in the pond, you may have to consider making the pond deeper.

Thanks for your comment, i will address your concerns individually, and thanks for your post!

Yes I understand the whole concept and the winter filtration is currently in use, which I run all year long regardless, except I shut down the potted bio filter during the winter. I have a 1600 gal per hour magnetic drive pump inside a homemade gun case which is packed with 3lbs of zeolite and 3lbs of charcoal to remove said contaminants as you voiced concern over, the outlet of the pump is running twin venturi air bubblers to aerate/oxygenate and keep the surface from freezing solid.

Well actually your wrong on your assumptions, the pond is 20 ft long by 8.5ft wide the center is 4ft deep, and the far back end is a little over 3.5 ft deep while the frozen end you see is only 2.5 ft deep.

to give you a better perspective there are 50+ photo's here to see all my details, you can view my entire construction and build photos at:

SlySly Good for you that you have taken the time to build your firs(?) koi pond!! I can't imagine what a filtration system is through a gun case? Sounds interesting. I've heard of a lot of things that people have used to filter their pond. Keep using the forum, they will keep reminding you of all the things you forget as you are enjoying your koi. It's hard to know it all unless you have done it for several years and are raising primo koi. Again, looks like a great start. .....cuda

thanks for the warm welcome!

Laugh Looks like the family had a great time building the pond. I'm not sure where you are located, but winters are long in PA where I live. I recently posted pics of my pond so far this winter, look at the pics if you will. I have a 3000 gph pump and in my filter system I use bio balls, lava rock and jap beads. My pond is 2800 gallons plus, depending on how full it is at the time. It is 2/1/2 ft. deep to almost 4 ft. in large part of the center. I have 15 koi and 2 lionheads. I have 4 koi that are 12" and the rest are varied. This is it's second summer and third winter. I had a different pond for 4 years before this. I have never had any ammonia levels. I did have a lot of string algae this year. I have plants in the pond and i am thinking twice about having as much as I have now, as I am getting more interested in the raising of koi than the meditative value and aesthetics of plants, that it has brought me. I had anchor worms this year, so, It's a fine line at this point. I don't want the koi to struggle. I've gotten very interested in what the professional koi keepers on the forum are saying and I'm having some change in my thoughts about it all. You'll love this forum. We'll see where it takes me. Hope it takes you to good places too! Welcome .... cuda
