I do have a smaller air pump. It's behind the waterfall and connected to two airstones which are sitting on either side of the waterfall. I did it that way so that I'd have lot's of movement, but the pond would still be mostly still, so I can see my Koi. My filtration system consists of a bead filter, which returns to a high water return. Along with the movement of the waterfall, these currents keep things moving on top of the pond, toward the skimmer. The skimmer has a 4300 Gal/ Hour pump, which powers the waterfall and also returns to a low water return. The low water return makes a nice current for the koi to swim in, and also keeps any crud that gets to the pond bottom, moving toward the 3" bottom drain, which is what feeds the pump that feeds the bead filter. Boy, I'm a little dizzy. Anyway, all those systems work beautifully together, keeping both the top and bottom of the pond very clear. Oh, I also purchased a piece of 100 micron screen. I installed a piece around the leaf basket connected to the bead filter pump. i also put a piece accross the entire back of the skimmer basket. That does a good job of filtering out a lot of the smaller particles. All in all, the system is working well. I seeded it with a little bacteria, had an ammonia and nitirite spike for a few days, and after that, no problems. Andrew
