My Pond Can't Post

Hi Every one, some of you has ask for a picture of my pond. here it is. a small one measuring 12 ft X 10ft X 4ft. I use two barrel as trickle tower you can see at the end of the picture and a sand filter. (Regret buying the sand filter, didn't help too much and very expensive) The water is clear and I have 7 kois in the pond.

Nice Pond!

I had a combination Sand/Rock Filter (Japanese Type) in my 15,000 gallon pond in California and I never regretted it. I used it as a pre-filter which I flushed out daily. It sure kept me from having to clean out my other filters often ... every SIX MONTHS or more. Which meant not having to disturb the Aerobic Bacteria in them.

Best Regards
Bran

Hi, that drift wood is actually made of concrete, painted to look like wood.

You did a very good job on that and I like it very much and would be cheaper than buying large rock and I just might give that a try. How did you get the concrete to look like wood?

Hi koifishgirl, my apologies first. I am not an artist. the construction of the pond were done by a Balinese landscape artist. You may be able to ask one of your sulpture cum artist friend to help you.

cheers

Yep, a bit far from Kelantan. Never mind, you will have a great pond. make sure you oversize the filter system. By the way, What is the dimension of your pond and what filter system are you installing? Cheers.

This is the begining of the pond. I hope the picture turn out fine. As for the filter system I'm planning for the gravity type - 5 chambers including the last chamber for the pump. The waterfall is only 4ft high just below the window. As you can see the house is still under construction. Its an extention actually. I think the pond will finish earlier than the house although I built it myself.

Hi, The pond looks great with the water fall by the side. However " IF " you can, make the pond width be at least 10ft and the depth 5ft. The length at 22 ft is ok. The reason being that kois seems to prefer at least 5 ft depth to grow large and at least 10 ft wide to have room to turn around when they reach torpedo size. ' 2 ft ' and above. Maybe you can make a bridge to cross over the pond.

My pond is only 3.5ft deep and I have regreted it since. The kois seems to grow more slowly in shallow depth. My friend has a 5 ft deep pond and I am very jealous of his jumbos.

And also, put a coat of polyurethane water proofing paint, colour grey. This helps a lot in keeping the water from seeping through the concrete and the dark colours brings out the colour of the kois.

Anyway, wish you the best for your pond.

Hi Bukitbunggakoi...I am curious as to how the water is sent up and into those wonderful waterfalls of yours? Is it possible to show us the rear side?

It is a very simple piping. Suction pipe from the pond through the pre-filter to the sand filter then the outlet through the water falls using 4 inch Upvc pipes. Cheers

You have a very beautiful pond. Its looks so relaxing and tranquil just looking at it with your koi's in there. Good for you and family.

Like you, I wished I had a deeper pond to allow the koi's to roam more freely. It's my next project but probably only in 2-3 years time.

Just realised in your first post saying that you regret buying a sand filter, I have one sand filter that after 3 months, clogged every 2 days, 10 days ago I've just converted my sand filter into PP bead filter ( follow the recomendation of needucho), so far still very satisfied with the performance, the water flow is excellent and clear. Still need to monitor the result in the next few weeks / months.

Thanks for the advice. The sand is not a problem, I can do back flush. However, there is no need for a sand filter if you have trickle tower that works well. The sand filter cost me a lot of money which I feel now was unnecessary. However since I have installed ii and run the outlet pipe through the water falls. No choice but to use it. Cheers
