Hi rmt,

what can I say its beautiful. It looks so very natural. did you build it yourself ?.

What sort of filter do you have and where is it ?. How long since you have had it ?

Stuart

Thanks Stuart,

Yes I did build it myself, with a lot of research and suggestions from local pond stores. I have a carbon and UV filter system, it's kind of hidden behind the left side of the waterfall. I am going to install a biological filter.....a barrel with filter media in it....this spring. Also I plan to add more plants. Any suggestions on what type are the most beneficial? Thanks again, Rob

Hi Rob,

Sounds good !. As a personal rule of thumb I do not add plants directly to my pond due to various reason, So I can not help you with plants. However when it comes to green fingers, I've noticed that KevKoi seems to know his way around the vegitation of a pond.

Any reccommendations Kevkoi ?

Stuart

Unsure Gee.. don't put me in a tight spot here Stuart. Wink I noticed the word 'spring'.... and from where I am from (Hot humid tropical Malaysia), there really aren't any seasons.
Unfortunately Rob, I'm rather unfamiliar with flora from your part of the woods. Frown BUT, I must say, ur pond looks very pretty. What I can say is, it would be quite a challenge for you to keep your water lilies in the pond with kois when they approach the 50cm plus sizes.
My kois just tore thru my water lilies in 2 days when I put them in the pond. I had some giant madagascan cypruses which didn't survive very well in the pond with the koi either. I now have a separate 'lily pond' next to my main koi pond for all the lilies and marginal plants. Most of the vegetation in my pond is in waterways or urns, out of the reach of my koi. (They don't behave themselves around a salad bar u know. Wink )

Thanks Colin, I recently thought I had a leak and was kinda dissapointed when it turned out I didn't. I already had plans of making it bigger if I did. Oh well, the next one I build will be MUCH bigger. Thanks for the comment.

Re: [rmt1968] My first Koi pond [In reply to] Can't Post

It's very common in this hobby to have build at least 2 - 3 ponds in the first 10 years of the hobby.

You build the first, It looks great, you friends and family really like itSmile. Then you read a magazine or see some pictures of someone elses pond and think I need a bigger pond. So you build another one. Your family and friends become confussed and start asking what was wrong with the first one ?Mad. After a few years and once your koi have grown some, you decide that again you pond is ok, but bigger would be nice and you still have some of the garden left. You convince your wife that if you had a bigger pond you wouldn't have to cut the grass as there wouldn't be any left. You build the pond and love it to bits. By this time your friends and family think you have gone completely nuts, they wonder why you have taken up the entire garden with a pond......

But don't worry. In this forum we all understand Wink.. it's called Koi kichi Crazy

Re: [SMW1] My first Koi pond [In reply to] Can't Post

hey Stuart, Nice idea

"You convince your wife that if you had a bigger pond you wouldn't have to cut the grass as there wouldn't be any left"

I was just looking out of my dining room staring at a section of the garden, right of where my koi pond is. Guess what? Hmm.. How nice if I put a pond-size partially above ground aquarium (concrete on 3 sides and a glass panel at the front) I have this fascination for predator type fish ( the angler side of me) and a school of Peacock Bass would be super. This pond will be be designed to overflow( if need be) into the current pond when i am tired of the predators and keep kois instead.

In this case its Fish Kichi...

Hi,

Nice thought, but won't that be dangerous ?.

If the fish in the top tank decide to jump downstream into the koi pond ?

Ya, They will probably wallop the tosais. A screen of sort will prevent any escapades. Just a lovely thought for the moment. I will have to consult my Feng-Shui consultant (geomancer) He didnt approve of my original plan for a much bigger pond. ie after I have my Home minister's approvable though..

Rgds.
