My soon to be Koi Pond Can't Post

Hi everybody,

My name is Am and I'm kind of new here, I've been attracted to koi since browsing through this forum. Earlier last year I've move to my own house and earlier this month manage to start building my own koi pond. Its now almost 60% completed. I'll have the pictures later. The pond size is around 7' x 4' with two floor depth of 3' and 4'. I'm planning to build an external biofilter system (2'x4'x2'(D)) feed by a submerge pump and using gravel as the main filtering medium.

Appreciate if you taikos and old timer could give me some pointers pertaining to this.

Hello, try to find something light weight for a biomedia! Gravel is cheap, but it weighs alot, this means time and energy spent in man power and gas, so to make things easier, go for lighter!!! it works better!

Gravel will encourage build up of sludge and is not easy to clean. SLudge decay will promote higher contamination and in the anaerobic conditions, bacteria that causes deiseases are aplenty. Try uisng filter materials that can be easily cleaned. Also pls have bottom drains in the filter to enable you to flsuh out the sludge.

hmm, good point, I've read about using skippy's as filtering media, but not sure about how many should i use. I'm not too keen on building a different compartment inside the filter box to cater for various filtering function, such as filtering out physical waste, bioballs and so on. I guess biofilter is pretty much the type of filter i'm talking about. Below is the picture of my pond, only need some plastering and some finishing on the waterfall. Already identify the pump to be use. Anybody knows anything about "venturi". I've heard that it can contribute alot to a clearer pond water and also expediate the process.

Any other filtering media to be used, is charcoal a good example?
