New Here--Current Pond Can't Post

Hello!

I'm new here and thought I would post some pics of my pond. Currently it's about 3,500 gallons, 3 feet at the deepest, 26" at the shallow end. Like a lot of people, after I built the pond, I learned all the things I SHOULD have done. Sooo... I'm planning to redo the pond in 2006, increasing the depth, installing bottom drains, a vortex settling chamber and bead filter. Right now the koi are small enough that I can get by, but by next year, they'll be ready for an upgrade.

Anyway, here it is! :-)

What a nice big pond you haveSmile It a shame you have to redo it. Anyway I'm sure you koi will
much happier in a deeper pond. Plus you don't have to worry if the outside temp goes all the way
up to the sunTongue coz you have the depth to keep your kois coolCool

Thanks for sharing and welcome to forumWink

rgds,
Jon

I dont think I would destroy that beautiful pond, If I could I would move over and build another and connect the two, what a waste to do away with that pond. Water is clear and I dont see what you did so wrong. The koi are small and will grow in that pond for a while if you dont have to many. Try and keep it and add to it.

Smile yep if you got the room make a deeper pond next to it and connect the two , keep more plants in the pond you got now and do not add any to the koi pond . the fish will love it and the water working from filter and plants will be lovely.Wink

Thanks for all the comments on my pond. :-) I never knew koi keeping could be so addicted, but I have pretty much blown off all my other hobbies in favor of the fish!

The biggest problem I have with the pond right now besides depth is the lack of bottom drains. To keep things clean and healthy take a lot of work right now. I've been vacuuming the pond once a week to keep the buildup of crud to a minimum, though now that the plants are taking off and outcompeting the algae, I can probably cut back to vacuuming every 2 weeks.

Unfortunately, we dug it (would you believe it was all dug by hand shovel) to have a fairly flat bottom, so I'm afraid retrofit bottom drains would be of minimal help. I do hate to disturb things, but since the liner only goes under the very first rim of rock, I'm hoping it won't be too destructive.

Nice big pond you have! The water is really clear I noticed. I am just like you, I never thought koi were so addicting, but now Im addicted(and i can't stop)! If I were a koi I would think that it would be cool to have two ponds and connect them, so in my opinion I would build another beside it or build one a little farther away and connect them. Just make sure that the connecting stream is at the same water level as both of the ponds. (hope that made sense) But anyways good luck either way you build the pond!
Thanks Marshall
