New Pond and queries on grape-vine leaves Can't Post

Dear Members,

I am new to the Forum and have started the koi hobby six months ago. Have constructed a basic concrete pond then, size 15' 0" x 8' 0" x 4' 0" deep ( about 3,000 gallon or 13 tons ) with a up & down filter system and a bakki shower to the pond. I have in it 10 kois ranging from 30 to 60 cm.
My worry is the grape-vine plant which I have growing on the pergola over the pond as shown in the photo attached. Can anyone advise whether fallen grape-vine leaves on the water surface is harmful to the water and kois?. I have been netting out the dried leaves daily.
Am trying not to get rid of the grape-vine plant because it helps to provide shade and a cooler enviroment for me and the kois on a hot sunny afternoon.

Cheerio,
Thiam Hwa

I've looked at several websites that list plants that are toxic to koi, and grapes or grape leaves are not on any of them, so you should be okWink. As an FYI (just in case you want to plant more stuff in the future) here are some good resources for no-no plant choices;

You should keep removing the leaves from the pond as when they decompose they use up oxygen taking it away fromy your koi.

Hi larz1,

Many thanks for the lists on poison plant information. That certainly make me feel
good this morning to learn that grapes or grape leaves are not on the list.

Thank again,
thiamhwa

Hi John,

Thanks for your advise regarding the danger of decomposed leaves.
I have been removing the leaves whenever I can either directly from the
pond or settlement chamber.

Best Regards,
thiamhwa

Your pond is quite beautiful. The grapevines are really lovely- the way you have them as a canopy is so pretty. You are very creative.Smile

Hi Winnie,

Thanks for your posting. I wish my pond could be as beautifully landscaped in
a pretty garden like yours. I guess I am not too much for the aesthetic value
of the pond.
My main concern was safety for the kids when the design and construction of
my pond was on going.

Best Regards,
thiamhwa
