Finished making 2 filters.
Gonna be running the pond on Wednesday when its gets a little sunnier.
When is a good time to put kois in??
i have alot of question to ask, but i have been browsing here on the site for a week now

Hi

Its not so much when to put fish in a pond its do it slowly in a new pond the filter can take months to mature so maybe just one every couple of weeks and testing for Ammonia and Nitrie every other day.

i agree with andy, do not buy all the kois at the same time.

i suggest you run the pond for a few days to a week before introducing the first 2 kois. (so you can check for leaks first)

while it is normal to buy the crappiest, ugliest, cheapest koi to "test" your pond, unless you have somewhere to dump them and have the heart to do so, i would advise against it.

make sure you watch the water parameters during the first week or two when you put the first kois. feed minimally (just enough for them to survive) so there isnt any ammonia/nitrite spike

HI NEWBIE
I LIVE JUST ACROSS THE LINE FROM YOU IN LYNDEN WA. WE HAVE A LARGE POND IN THE BACKYARD ABOUT 15FT BY 20FT ABOUT 3 1/2 DEEP . THEY ARE RIGHT IT IS BEST TO GO SLOW. BUT THE KEY TO YOUR POND STAYING CLEAN IS TO HAVE PLENTY OF FILTRATION IF YOU ERROR ERROR ON THE SIDE OF TO MUCH. WE MADE A BOG THAT FEEDS A STREAM THAT GOES INTO THE POND, ARE WATER HAS BEEN SO CLEAR FROM THE START THAT I CAN WATCH THE FISH FROM MY KITCHEN WINDOW . THIS POND IS ON ITS 3RD YEAR BUT WE HAVE OTHER SMALLER ONES THAT WE HAVE HAD FOR ABOUT 6 YEARS. MY KOI ARE DOING JUST GREAT. THE FEW HOURS WE GET WITH SUN I GO OUT AND WATCH THEM. ANYWAY HAVE FUN.

When I built my pond (7 years ago now) I put in 2 Comets & 2 Shubunkins to help mature the water/filter.

Reason for choice of fish? Because thats what my mother wanted and they went into her pond when I had finished with them.

If you know someone with a pond then ask them if they would take your "maturers" off of you and what type of fish they want.

You benefit and they get free fish.
