Our joy Can't Post

Hi all,

Finally got the picture to share with you.The construction took some time with adjustments here and there but we are quite pleased with the result.

The Pond is 16ft(L)x12ft(B)x5ft(D). The filter borders the front of pond in L-shape from left to right. It is covered by slate tiled panels which are a mistake as it is very heavy and requires two person to open. I had not much choice in order to maintain the aesthetic of the floor area. The filterconsist of 1 settlement with nets,1chamber with brushes ,3 chambers of Jap mats, 1chamber with baskets of cockle shells, 1 for the pumps and the last is the drain chamber. I have a submerged 40 watt UV light in the pump chamber ; my family couldnt wait for the green water to clear. It works beautifully. Only 3 weeks and I am able to see to at least 3 feet of water.

I have two 12,000 litres /hr pumps; 1 for the water cascade and the other through 3 venturis to the main pond. 2 air pumps; one for the filter and the other for the uni-rings for one the the 3 bottom drains.

The pond is cover to 80% but polycarbonate sheets I have lets in too much sunlight and heat. So I will be covering the pergola with nettings.

Now that the water is clearer, I suddenly realised there are quite a lot of fishes about 30 of various sizes. So I dont think I ll add any new purchase for the time being.

I am attaching some pictures of the pond and my daughter's Kuchibeni Inazuma. I am not really sure it can be classified as Inazuma. Comments? (sorry I received a prompt advising that my jpeg file s are too big. I ll try to email to Mr khoo)

Thank you Mr Khoo for helping me post the pictures.
I had intended to send more but yahoo restricts attachements to 1.5MB . Not very conversant with computers. Perhaps someone can give pointers.

Comments are most welcomed.

Hi Hwong, beautiful pond! Good depth for keeping larger koi. Beware though of the absence of a barrier between the porch and the pond. Younger children needs to be supervised at all times. Smile The kohaku is very attractive indeed but I don't see the kuchibeni. Regarding your koi being shy all the time since the green water has cleared, give them some time. Patience usually gets the job done. Smile Once again, congratulations for being the owner of a beautiful pond!
Always friendly :)

CoolThanks Dttk, Chingbee,

Thks for the compliments. I kept the design formal to blend with the house design. Some didnt like it coz its too plain. But My family like it and thats is alright by me.

My children are swimmers but maybe visiting children will need to be watched over. The kuchibeni is right smacked on the lips just like a lovely lady but I couldnt position it for a shot.Maybe I'll try again and post it for your viewing pleasure. Can this koi be classifed as Inazuma Kohaku?

The water has definitely become clearer but not crsytal clear. Perhaps there are suspended solids. It is already a joy watching them at different depths. This morning the kois seems less cautious so I thought maybe I put my hand in with pellets; they did not scatter but swam to the bottom and stayed there until I withdrew. I suppose you can call it an improvement.

Remember The thing about stop buying for the time being. Well I had another excuse ; my son's birthday yesterday. "I reserved two Showas for him" and will bring him to the Koi place this Sunday to pick one. He happy I also happy!

I had my eye on a classic juvenile-25cm Asagi, but Alas the left pectoral fin is slightly deformed. What a waste. Maybe I will still take her home if the dealer will give it for a song just to see how it develops.

bye and happy Koi-ing!

Hi Hwong, I'm no expert but I'm certain that this is a Inazuma Kohaku. I don't blame you for getting that pretty looking koi that you happen to come across because most of us would have done the same thing! Somehow we get weak at the knees when we chance upon something that we consider as a rare find. Upgrading one's stock is a normal process in koi-keeping I suppose. The problem is looking for a good home for the less attractive one. Crazy

Hi Chingbee, Inazuma is "lightning strike pattern". The Hi from the head continues down the body with a zig-zag pattern to the tail without any break in between. Smile

Re: [dttk] Our joy [In reply to] Can't Post

Dttk,

Thanks for the confirmation. It looks pretty now and hope it will retain its appeal when bigger. I took my son and daughter to the dealer on Sunday as promised. Told my son to make his pick of the 2 showas. HE PICKED ALRIGHT-BOTH OF THEM! My knees went weak instead! Just where do you send your less attractive ones. Its not easy cos they need a big enough place and those with the pond probably have the same problem as you do unless he is like I; running in a new pond. Now I ahve inherited my friend's problem. Anyone testing his new pond can contact me lah.

Rgds.
