Our new beautiful pond!!! Can't Post

Smile Here is our brand new beautiful pond! Smile

Our first pond was built by a landscaper who thought that digging a hole shaped like a salad bowl was creating a pond. He didn't even level the waterfall! We hired a water feature specialist, showed our design and plans, worked on the breakdown and construction, and created this beauty!

Our pond under construction

The front area was the extension that was to be the 2' still pool for our lillies. The rear area with the liner piled up was our old pond area. It was kept intact until the still pond was done, then we broke down the old one, dug out he area and broke down the wall and then finished the pond and landscape.

The finished product at sunset

The front area is manned with a pair of Pond Sweep skimmers/brushes/green fiber mats. The first one moves 3000 gph and recycles the water under the waterfall to prevent dead spaces. The other skimmer skims and draws from a bottom intake and moves 6500 gph through the two waterfall areas. A slider valve allows me to shut off the bottom feed during the winter and another slider moves the output level between the biowaterfall area (equipped with 3 fiber mats and 3 bags of lava rock) and a secondary fall that looks like a stream running down from behind the waterfall.

A view of the falls

The second waterfall is not visible in this shot and is behind the rocks to the right. This is the koi pool and is three feet deep with steep walls. A lotus and several purple pickeral weeds were planted around the edges.

The final feature is what we have named the Sister Stones. They look like stones that were together at one time, then ripped apart by nature leaving the gap to be filled in by water. I feed the babies from one of the stones and both can be stood on to view the fish and plants. The pond was designed so that you keep getting different views as you move around the perimeter of the pond. We grow lillies, irises, grass, a miniature water blue bell, and water willows. Pictures of my babies will have to wait until spring. We have been hit with very early cold weather ... and even snow yesterday. Sheesh.

The sister stones

Need I say it? Tongue We love our pond and our fish.

The pond has goldfish and orandas from the old pond. Seven butterfly koi added once the pond stabilized. And one $3 koi that has beautiful gold bands down each side, black ripples down its back, a white belly, and a gold/black mask on its' face.

Very cool pond.
I like the way it's split up into sections.
I have a question for you. I might as well go first.....Cool

Is the Koi area completly isolated from the other part of the pond so you can medicate them, if needed, without wiping out your plant collection ?
Granted, fish can be quarantined and treated but when it's parasitic in nature those little %^#@#ers get into the rock, plants, everything so you often have to treat the whole shabang.
Since we arte a bunch of raving Koi lunatics around here I KNOW that question would come up eventually.
When I mean raving Koi lunatics we even have one unnamed individual....uh.... in the medical profession ......who has "toe sucking" Koi !
Wink

Well, my koi aren't sucking my toes....yet!

The entire area is one contiguous pond. The main thing that defines the koi pool is its' depth and steep walls. I do not have one yet, but next spring I intend to build an isolation tank on the back of my house. I also designed contrary to the direction the koi enthusiasts go: we have stones in a few areas of the pond bottom as well; we go for the natural look. However, the stone is few and far between and

The only potential problem that may exist in the implementation is that there are several caves throughout the pond. The fish love them especially when the sun is high and the plants are sparce because they duck in themfor protection. At mid noon you'd think there were no fish in the pond. But I had a black koi which went in and never came out and even though I went diving in the pond to search the caves, some of them go back a bit and down so that I could not locate the dead(?) koi. Of course, I also had one oranda disappear and presumed dead and several months later it showed up!

I am not too embroiled in the raising of koi and really don't expect that mine will ever be show fish. I just love seeing them and they make my pond alive.

What a beautiful pond!

You have obviously put so much effort into it and it looks really lovely. It is really nice to see a pond which will keep the occupants entertained. I know my fish would love those caves you talked about. Wink

Good luck with your pond and your fish!

Hi Condor, u can say I am a bit late in viewing. Well, I am trying to get some idea for the layout of a new water feature. I tried to view the pictures that u had posted but their URL address are not valid. Can u kindly post ur pond pictures again? From the members comments, it must be something special.
